ferrule/tip patent

I heard that Gulyassy is going to sell his patent to big manufacturer. What will happen if someone owns this patent that can sue everyone for infringment? Does this mean I will have to stop putting on ferrule/tips for my customers?

to me,,,this is SO not a big deal because the advantage to any ferrule/tip idea is negligible. i mean,,,,,does any cuemaker REALLY need to be so hard up for this ferrule/tip that he can't use an alternative??? is this like some kind of magic ferrule/tip we've all been waiting for?

if gulyassy wants to keep this as his own, he's blowing it, imo, because ultimately,,,,,who cares. he'd be better off licensing it for a small fee. his returns will be greater.

If you read the patent, it is only for a one piece ferrule-tip. I'm not sure how many people use that combination...

Rash, I really don't think you need to worry. Unless you're a big manufacturer like viking or mcdermott or something, it won't be worth their time (money) to sue you.:)

What does the patent actually state? Does it cover the material? Design? The idea?

I personally think the one piece design is a piece of crap anyways...you have to worry about it splitting later on and then you have to repair it for free....I won't do them anymore when you can glue on a phenolic tip to a normal ferrule and get the same results...

Wasn't the whole idea of the one piece design to combat the tip popping off? I don't think anyone reinvented the wheel here. Plus the market is somewhat saturated with the "next great thing" that this patent comes a little late. Doesn't everyone that wants one have one by now?

Varney started it before Mike anyway. I have an 1999 Varney with just a white ferrule rounded off. His newer stuff works better now anyways and he does a 2 peice that the tip will NOT come off. That Jerico guy patented his too. What did he patent?
