what is the purpose of using fiber tip pads between the ferrule and tip? I just started putting my own tips on and was wondering why.

How do you get to Carnegie Hall?

Practice, practice, practice...

How do you get info that has been discussed a gazillion times on AZB?

Search,search...

Originally, and most importantly, to avoid the cracking of an Ivory ferrule as a tip
"breaks in" which involves both flattening down and mushrooming<spreading out>.

Currently, many players prefer pads just because they like the resulting "hit".

I use red fiber pads under all my tips, but soak them in superglue to apply the same theory as the kamui clears. Firms the hit up a little bit, and creates a solid foundation to protect the ferrule.

I cut the top (black) layer off all my Kamui tips - then sand both sides and use it for a pad. Works great.
