Top Filipino cue artists seek to keep their domination of the world billiards scene as they compete in the 17th Annual Kansai 9-Ball Open on January 20 to 21 in Osaka, Japan.

The Filipinos led by reigning world champion Ronnie Alcano are heavily favored in the tournament they mightily ruled in the past.

Aside from Alcano, other top Filipino pool players seeing action include Rodolfo Luat and Dennis Orcollo.

Luat is coming off a runner-up finish to Niels Feijen in the Derby City's 9-Ball competition, where he pocketed US$ 8,400, plus a bonus of US$ 3,000 for placing second to Efren "Bata" Reyes in the race for the Master of the Table plum.

Orcollo, though not faring well in the classic's tournament proper, had made his mark in outside, winning a couple of money-rich side events, as well as a number of money-game matches. He went home with around US$ 20,000 in the bag.

It will be Alcano's first major tournament of the year since winning the World Pool Championship late last year held here.

"We are confident that our players will continue their domination in the Kansai Open," said Billiards and Snooker Congress of the Philippines (BSCP) president Ernesto Fajardo.

"Our triumph in the Derby City Classic provided a good start for our campaign this year, and the BSCP sees no reason of it stopping. Instead we are looking forward for another banner year," he added.

Other Filipinos participating in the tourney are Lee Van Corteza, Carlo Biado, Antonio Lining, Ramil Gallego, Roel Esquillo, Rudy Morta and Dondon Razalan.

Reyes and Francisco Bustamante were also invited. But their manager Rolly Vicente said the two have yet to confirm their availability.

The Filipinos are eyeing the repeat of their 2005 campaign in Kansai which saw Warren Kiamco emerging as the champion with Orcollo, Gallego and Lining completing a 1-2-3-4 finish for the Philippines .

Masaaki Tanaka is the defending champion and will lead the host country's stand along with Asian Games 8-Ball gold medalist Satoshi Kawabata.

The Filipinos are fresh from the successful conquest of the just-concluded 2007 Derby City Classic in Kentucky where they bagged most of the plum and a huge chunk of the prize money. (PNA)

I thought Lining was 3rd.

Still the worst showing ever after a 1-2-3-4 finish last year. Got to give it to the Japanese, I don't know that they had IT in them.

very unexpected results from Ronnie and Dennis, however Japan is not
the cakewalk some think it is, remember they have produced multiple world
champions
