Finally figured out why they call it a 314....

Maybe the cueball should be white because white is the ABSENCE of color, and the 8 black because black is ALL colors.

yes I was an art major, and thats about all I remember

not to mention being an art major sucked because I was color blind. I like black and white photography though! My art teachers could never understand my disdain for impressionists.....

Guess I'm kinda slow, but I figured out why they call it a 314 shaft. It hit me about a month ago, the shaft is cut into 'pie' pieces and the number for pi is 3.14......Did everyone know this already, or am I really that slow? I guess I never really gave it much thought. Just thought I'd share.

If you read the old rules of 8 ball the 1 has to go in one of the side pockets and 9 has to be made in the other. If you ever get a chance to see some of the old classic matches they do play that way. I can't remember if the there is any order when they have to be made.

Never could track with the "If a tree falls in the woods does it make noise problem." Heck set up a motion detector, if it picks up vibration there is noise -- has to make a sound as sound is not a property of only ears unless you define it that way.

Same thing for money in the drawer. Put it in a plexiglass drawer! Sometimes philosophers are simply a pain in the a** (no disrespect to anyone, it is just that philosophers make life complicated with lots of words, why say "marmalade" when "jam" will do?)

You ever see some of the old matches on ESPN classic with people like Irving Crane, Luther Lassiter, and Willie Mosconi. They played a game of 8 ball where after the break, the opponent got to determine which half of the table (3 pockets on right side or 3 pockets on the left side) they'd sink the final ball.

Sort of. White is all colors of light, OR the absence of pigment. Black is the absence of light, OR all pigments. Physics and paint don't agree here.

Hell, I remember pre-dial phones. No crank, but you just picked up the headset from the cradle and an operator came on and said "Number please". At which time you said "Hello, Miss Belknap (or Laura if you were an adult) and gave here a 3 digit number if it was in town or a town name and a number, maybe longer than 3 digits if you were calling a city.

I got one... when you look at a ZIP Code map, the numbers generally progress from the east to the west.

When you look at an area code map, there doesn't seem to be a pattern at all... why not?

I'd guess that it's because area codes were assigned adaptively as telephone service areas were added to the system, which would have been fairly sporadic. Zip codes—being a fairly "recent" program—were assigned in one swell foop, allowing the Postal Service to actually design the system.

On that note... We have I-99 in PA... it goes from Bedford to just north of Altoona, but will eventually hit NY and the NY State Thru-way (10+ years)... it's currently under construction... but it goes against all of the rules of the interstate numbering system. 99 is west of 95... but I guess if you have enough political power (thanks Bud Shuster) you can get pretty much anything you want. Oh yeah... did I mention the 250,000 cubic yards of contaminated-pyritic soil that goes with it?
