Just posted 42 available colors of dyed veneers made specifically for pool cues on my site www.westerncue.com. They are offered in 2 thicknesses----.020" (maple) and .036" (European Sycamore). Hall of fame and other top cuemakers use them. They are offered on a satisfaction guaranteed basis. Thanks, Martin

I went to the site, clicked on the cue parts & veneer page, but nothing was on It that I could see regarding the veneers. Please post when the info is up on the site, so I can check them out.:) Thanks Greg

Hi Martin. Just wondering here about how the two veneers vary other than thickness. European Sycamore IS a maple species. It was originally called and classified as a Sycamore a long time ago, and was later correctly classified as a maple, and is Acer pseudoplatanus (which means maple that is a fake Sycamore). Do you know what kind of maple the .020 is and where it is harvested from?

What about the japaneese sycamore, same one, or Know what species It is by any chance?

Also, think I heard the popular veneer is soft, but what about the angere or kuto? (hope I spelled those correctly) I see alot of that for sale, but rarely hear mention of It by cuemakers.

Greg, Thanks for letting me know about the site glitch. It has been fixed. Anegre works okay for black, I know this from experience making point squares and trimming them with a laminate router. Many of the veneers available today look lifeless and dull. I started making them out of my frustration of what was available and was able to use knowledge gained in my first career. PM me if I can be of help.

Hi Kelly,

Eventually I will probably use all Euro Sycamore for my .020" stock as well. Right now it is actually a mix of Euro Sycamore and maple harvested from the Midwest. There is no noticeable difference in color of finished product between the species and they are difficult, if not impossible to differentiate in sheets. They glue, trim, machine well, and are not brittle. I make the .020" to accomodate the cuemakers who like that thickness. Personally, I like the .036" veneers because you can see them better in a pool cue.

Hmmm, you got me on a few there Greg. :o

I see that Martin answered your question about anegre (that can be one beautiful wood when veneers are rotary cut). As for Japaneese sycamore or kuto, I don't know.

As for poplar (or popular if you ask my dad...:D ), it is VERY soft. Southern pine has a janka hardness of 700, and poplar has a janka hardness of only 540...softer than pine. For comparison, hard maple is around 1450. I think a lot of the publicity regarding certain veneers softening the hit could be from using cheap soft veneers like Poplar? Just a hunch.

The english sycamore maple iirc has a janka of about 1200. That is not as hard as hard maple, but harder than red maple which is used in cues when it has nice curl. Big leaf maple (western US maple species) janka is softer than red maple but harder than pine.

Thanks Martin, nice info.

Thanks for the info Kelly. :D Well It's always the cheapest, so it must Be popular:confused:

Martin, the colors sound interesting, and i aggree few dyed veneers stand above the rest for vibrant colors & good saturation. can't wait to see pics of them. I'll be sure to get in touch when I'm ready to try some out.:)

I like the idea of wrapping the .020 and .036 together, but that's just me.

Thanks guys, Greg

It should be showing text by now...anyone else not able to see the page?

They show now. Thank you. Do you have any idea when you will be able to post some pictures of the colors?

Dick

I'm hoping to get a good chunk of the photos done this weekend Dick. With many veneer colors, what is on the outside is generally darker than what is on the inside. For now I will only photo the outside to give an idea of what the colors look like. Eventually I'd like to also show the veneer in edged or cut profile so someone can have an even better idea of what the veneer will look like. Thanks,

Martin

Send me a pm of specific colors you have in mind and your address. I am soon to post pics on my site to simplify color selection. Thanks, Martin

About half of the colors are posted at my site www.westerncue.com. I'll probably re-shoot the photos because the colors appear washed out. Will give you a general idea of what the colors look like though. Thanks, Martin

Colors have been posted and stock is good on 95% of the colors in both thicknesses at the moment.
