Finish Matching

How do you guys figure out what type of finish is on a cue? For example, if you're making a new shaft. How do you know what is used to finish the butt so you can match as best as possible. I have a couple cues I'm working on and one looks like an oil finish so I'm guessing Tung oil. But the other one looks like a CA finish. It appears very thin on the butt. I look forward to any input.

Unless your refinishing the butt and the shaft (s)
You don't!
 
Discuss options with the customer before starting. Try to sell them on what you prefer to use, they might be okay with a slight mismatch knowing you are set up for something and have confidence in it. Always try to match the gloss of the rest of the cue.
