Hi, When applying finish on a cue, is the cue completley flat? then finish put over the jont, even if they are metal? or is the joint left a tad larger and the forearm filled with finish to make it flush?

I dont do this type of work, just wondering what is normal or proper. It came to mind that stainless and ivory dont seem to be sprayed? but brass often looks like it is.

And while I'm scratching itchs. how deep are wrap grooves actualy cut?
same for linnen as leather?

Thanks in advance for educating me, and satisfying my curiosity.

With stainless, brass or delrin they should be slightly oversize. You tape them off and build the finish slightly above flush and then wet sand and polish. Ivory and phenolic are just sprayed over.

I try and cut mine .022 although it is not always possible. I hate to do anything that will cause future problems if the cue has to be rewraped. We've all seen the masking tape build up trick under some wraps.

As Murray said on the finish. I don't know when Murray makes his wrap cut, before or after his finish, so I don't know about his depth. I cut my wrap groove on my last pass on the butt. I use a saw machine for tapering my butts so this leaves both ends to be squared up. I put on the finish and rub out the finish before I square the wrap groove. I cut to a depth of .025 but my wraps are very tight so they don't press a whole lot.
