My shop is in the garage and the furnace is there too. I also have two grandkids and don't want to take a chance with their envronment. What finish would you use that would be non explosive and non-hazardous to health. How would you spray it (booth etc.) Any tips to still making a nice cue with a great finish but still keeping the family in mind. Is it even possible?

Water Based
You won't have any problems with any of the water based finishes.I have tried several & settled on the emtech 9300.It polishes out great with micro mesh.
I have the same type of considerations about health and contamination.
Get yourself a small paint booth(check the modeling forums or pm me & i can give you the info on the guy I bought mine from),buy an inexpensive hvlp gun from harbor frieght & you'll be at a good starting point.

I use a super-glue finish, it is alittle more painstaking from what I've heard on here. I have no experience with any other kind of finishes though. It is relatively cheap and no booth is needed. I just use one of two coats of thin, sign my name then load on four or five coats of med. If you take your time and apply it smoothly it will sand smooth easily. I then use System V by Barringer and I have had great results.
