Finishing even...

For like the last month, I either break even or end up down a couple bones. Like yesterday... Playing straight, I got up two games, 10 a game, just destroyed the guy... the first game was 50-9. 2nd game was like 50-21. Anyway... all of the sudden, all pressure is off, no matter what I do, I can't run more that 6 or 7 balls because I can't muster the mental strength to create a plan. I tell myself, "Don't play to get even, always play to get ahead." But it hasn't worked. Has anyone gone through this? I am tired of heading home from a hard days work at the pool hall, EVEN! LOL I have only been playing for two years... so, once again, it is probably something that will come with time, but I just wonder if any of you have gone through this and have any advice.... Thanks.

Im the opposite. Although I'm always eager to win, if I break even, I'm glad to have competed and tested my skills under pressure.

One guy I remember who doesn't like quitting when breaking even is the colorful Frankie Hernandez. I remember gambling one time on a worknight with him (he was spotting me) in 1997, and we were breaking even when 3:00 AM arrived at Chelsea Billiards, which was a twenty four hour room. I said I'd had enough, and he nearly lost it, arguing that he didn't want the house to be the only winner in our matchup. Still, I needed to get home and get some sleep. He didn't want me to leave, so I offered him a very generous compromise.

I'd play him one rack for all the table time (about $35 worth on this occasion) if he let me break. I lost that rack, so he beat me out of the table time that night.

Wish I'd broken even! Left with a bit of a bad taste in my mouth.

Good Story! It's not so much that I mind breaking even... it's just how my game "lets up" when I am ahead that really bothers me.
