I'm no longer a resident of the area, but I feel compelled to convey that Valley Billiards in New Alexandria, PA was destroyed by fire Friday morning.
Not to be confused with Valley of the coin-op table world and VNEA sponsorship, Valley Billiards, located in the Southwestern Pennsylvania town of New Alexandria, was known for their hand made custom pool tables. Valley's owner, Burley Hartin, was always very proud of his creations, based on the old Brunswick T-Rail design; bolting the rails to the table frame parallel to the table surface. Burley, along with his son, employed a hearing impaired staff that proudly manufactured and installed their tables. Their tables can be found in the homes of Pittsburgh Steeler, Pirate, and Penguin fans AND players alike, not to mention numerous pool rooms in the suburban Pittsburgh area.
Valley wasn't just a manufacturer of tables, it was also a destination; a place for players to pick up a few cubes of chalk or just 'shoot the sh*t'. My Father introduced me to Burley almost 40 years ago when his business was located in Pitcairn. Since then, Burley sold me first 'real' cue (a Mali still in my possession), installed and serviced a table at the Fraternal Order of Eagles in my area, and was key in providing a table to our local Athletic Club when funds were tight. Burley isn't a selfish man and he didn't deserve to have his livelihood of 50 some odd years go up in flames.
Thanks Burley! I hope you find the gumption to carry on the tradition that is Valley Billiards!
