After 15 years of playing pool and taking my game about as far as I can go on my own, I finally broke down and invested some money in lessons from a pro player .... in this case, Charlie "Hillbilly" Bryant.
After spending 3 hours working with him last night, I drove home, got some sleep and woke up this morning thinking "Holy crap, I really know very little about this game I've been playing for so long!"
In the first three hours, he managed to find flaws in my stance, stroke and pre-shot routine and give me some great tips and drills to correct them, began to show me the basics of his method for controlling the cue ball speed (very unique - never would have thought of it on my own), and discussed his thoughts on the fundamental aspects of playing the game and what's important in taking your game to the next level.
I left there with handouts, notes, drills to work on and we barely even scratched the surface of the materials and information that he's written and developed - it was a great experience and I think one of the best things about it is that I'm really excited about playing again for the first time in a long time.
What impressed me the most was the ease with which he explained things and the logical nature of how he took me through everything. He's one of the friendliest, most down to earth people I've met and if you're looking for someone who can explain both the fundamentals and of the game and advanced techniques, I would 100% recommend contacting him and setting something up.
If you're considering one on one instruction or looking for someone to travel and teach or give a demo to a group, I'd tell you to drop a PM to Hillbilly - I feel like I got my money's worth and then some and can't wait to get back over and work with him again in a couple of weeks.
