First lesson with Charlie Bryant last night ......

After 15 years of playing pool and taking my game about as far as I can go on my own, I finally broke down and invested some money in lessons from a pro player .... in this case, Charlie "Hillbilly" Bryant.

After spending 3 hours working with him last night, I drove home, got some sleep and woke up this morning thinking "Holy crap, I really know very little about this game I've been playing for so long!"

In the first three hours, he managed to find flaws in my stance, stroke and pre-shot routine and give me some great tips and drills to correct them, began to show me the basics of his method for controlling the cue ball speed (very unique - never would have thought of it on my own), and discussed his thoughts on the fundamental aspects of playing the game and what's important in taking your game to the next level.

I left there with handouts, notes, drills to work on and we barely even scratched the surface of the materials and information that he's written and developed - it was a great experience and I think one of the best things about it is that I'm really excited about playing again for the first time in a long time.

What impressed me the most was the ease with which he explained things and the logical nature of how he took me through everything. He's one of the friendliest, most down to earth people I've met and if you're looking for someone who can explain both the fundamentals and of the game and advanced techniques, I would 100% recommend contacting him and setting something up.

If you're considering one on one instruction or looking for someone to travel and teach or give a demo to a group, I'd tell you to drop a PM to Hillbilly - I feel like I got my money's worth and then some and can't wait to get back over and work with him again in a couple of weeks.

Great testimonial! :p

Charlie has always been nice to me and definitely loves to talk about pool. I've heard other people say he's an excellent instructor as well. I'm always happy to hear good things about people!

I've seen Charlie teach and my jaw dropped open. His patience and evaluating an individual game was amazing.

I don't recommend people very often, but I highly recommend Charlie even though when I asked Charlie to evaluate my game, he thought about for a minute and said, "Take two weeks off, and then, give the game up!" LOL

Just kidding!

Does he teach at his house, your house or at the local pool hall?

I drove to his house which is about an hour away from mine - he has a nice Diamond table in a private room. I'm sure that other options/locations would probably be available if you ask him.

Some things of note after 34+ years of shooting for fun. (I'm not a professional)
1)A pool game is a Chess game with four + one geometric demensions.
2)All players have their strong points and weak points. Note them and play your game accordingly.
3)Every game offers a lesson, even when you win, learn that lesson.
4)when someone you consider a "lesser" player offers to teach you something, pay attention.
5)Know when to loose a game in order to let others play the game. Your friends are far more important then the corner pocket.

How fortunate for you to be geographically close. Man, you are learning from a master...pay attention, grasshopper!

Hillbilly Charlie

I also met Hillbilly Charlie @ innisbrook in Tampa 2 weeks ago! I was one of the vendors there. And we all got treated to a expose by Charlie. His diamond counting technique is awesome. Very charismatic guy!! You won't find a better teacher in my opinion!! Ron @ www.twistedturtlecustomcues.com

i guess your ready for your second lesson??? lol it happens!!!!

Ha! Between me running out and then dogging the last ball and the rolls that the other team was getting, last night was not the highlight of my pool career - lol! We'll make it up next week.

great teacher

If you ever have the chance to get a lesson from Hillbilly, don't pass it up. Charlie is a long time serious student of the game, and has an uncanny ability to connect to almost anyone, and with humor and insight, make an immediate impact on fundamentals. I've seen him do it, and wish he was closer to home for me....get a sample and watch one of his how to break videos that are on youtube....
GET THE BOOK OUT CHARLIE, you'll sell a ton of them....
