There was a article in the Detroit News on Sunday.

Detroit hosted the First National Billiard Tournament on April 12, 1859.

Michael Phelan of NY beat Detroiter John Seereiter. The prize was $15,000.

Phelan is considered to be the father of American pool playing.

Tickets were $5 and 500 to 600 attended. Play started at 7:30 pm and lasted until dawn.

Doesn't mention what game was played but said that Seereiter banked for the lead and choice of balls but ended up losing.

The amazing part is the prize in relation to the gate. Seems as if not much has changed except that was a hugh amount for both back then. Take into account inflation and population pool must have been more popular. I am sure 600 at a tournament today would be a considered standing room only. I remember back in the 50's Elvis had a concert in Detroit and the tickets cost $5. Many of us wanted to attend but $5 was more than most of us could afford.
