Canada Move Into Second Round

EIGHTH seeds Canada became the first team to book their place in the second round of the inaugural PartyPoker.com World Cup of Pool.
Luc Salvas and Tyler Edey defeated the Thailand pairing of Tepwin Arunnath and Amnuayporn Chotipong 9-5 to set up a match in the last 16 with either Czech Republic or Canada on Friday.
It was a remarkable achievement for Canada as they won despite only having one cue between them as Salvas lost his cue at the airport arriving for this event.
He said: “I played with Tyler's cue and playing some shots was a bit different a couple of times.
“My tip is different but for the rest of the match there were no problems. You notice it when you’re making shots but I hope I have my cue for the next match.”
Edey added: "Thailand played well but I think nerves got to them and they seemed to miss a few shots but then again so did we.”
Thailand won the lag but a missed jump shot on the red three proved costly as Salvas fired home the 9-Ball to move the North Americans into an early lead.
But the score was soon level as Edey failed to pocket a red three of his own and the Thailand team made it 1-1.
However, they could not capitalise further on this as they scratched off the break in the third rack and a fortunate jump shot that sunk the orange 5 led to Canada moving back ahead.
Both sides ran out from the break in the next three racks as Canada moved into a 4-2 lead in the first ever World Cup of Pool match.
A poor safety by the Canadians on the green six appeared to hand the next rack to Thailand but Arrunath produced a dreadful shot when he missed a simple-looking 9-ball as the score became 5-2.
The lead was soon extended to 6-2 as the Thailand players were performing below par in what was becoming an easy match for the North Americans.
Arunnath ran out of position in the ninth rack but a fine recovery from Chotipong saw him roll the 9-Ball into the top pocket to reduce the deficit to three.
But this proved a brief respite for Thailand as Canada took the next two to move to the hill and on the verge of an easy victory.
Canada were two shots away from victory but missed the black 8 as Thailand won two successive matches for the first time in the match.
But any hopes of a memorable fightback were soon ended as Canada completed a 6-9 combination to seal a 9-5 victory and comfortable move into round two.
