first video- 42 ball run

Nice Run! I like the points brought up about the side pocket key balls and the need to have an even better key ball to that key ball. Something I will consider in my own practice in the future.

Thumbs Up

Jim:
Just watched your video, very good. I enjoyed watching it. You shoot very well with a nice stroke & pace. You also shoot well off the rails, which is a big plus. The first two racks were well played. It went a little out of control in that 3rd rack. In my opinion where you went wrong during that rack was at the 10:33 mark. I would of shot the 8 ball in the side pocket with low/left. The cue ball had an easy angle to set up on that 14 ball in the corner and bumping the 11 ball maybe into a good break ball position. The 5 ball would of been your ins. ball. Instead, you took the 6 ball in the corner bumping the 14 near the 5 ball causing a problem. You then had to take the 2 ball off the 15 and so on came hard shots one after another. Over all, very good shooting. That ball before the key ball, you put a little too much draw on that shot as you know. I know you would of been still running them if you would of got on that key ball like you wanted to. Good work, looking forward to more videos.

Jim:

I like to think I have a similar stroke and pace, but my high run is only 33.

Anyway, I was wondering why you slammed the nineball at 45 sec into the first rack, blasting the ten up table. You did it again at 5:00. In both cases no balls were touching.

Hi Johnny,

If I had followed that shot, the 9, i would have glanced off the 7 and ended up underneath everything. Drawing was no better, IMHO, and trying to stop for the 15 in the side is above my skill level.

So i decided on a stun, which admittedly did not have to be hit with the force i hit it, but i got the intended result- opening up the 7, 1, and 15, and to a lesser degree the 8 and 14.

I could have tied something up by moving the 10, but it was a good trade-off, i felt. from where i intended to land (which incredibly is where i actually landed!) it would be nearly impossible to hook myself.

At the 5:00 mark, shooting the 8 ball, I was not straight in, therefore had to run into something.

I hit it the way I did because i preferred running into the 10, to clear the congestion, and to keep the 5 as a possible next shot. Had I chosen to roll into the 5 instead, I might have tied up the 13, which was a prime candidate for a break shot. That, and I like to make two at a time every now and then :D

thanks for watching- hope my explanation makes sense

regards, jim

hi straightman,

you are right, no doubt about it. as you and steve both point out, i made i big error overlooking the 8 ball in the side.

you're also right that my choice, the left handed 6 bal shot began the death spiral we are all so well acquainted with.

as i told steve, the funny thing is, i didn't even notice it on review, until he pointed it out! i was so consumed by my screw-up in hitting the 14 that i didn't see the error that compounded my problems. there must be something to that objective viewpoint stuff after all.

thanks for the observations, much appreciated

best regards, jim
