I know Allison and Earl are sponsored by Cuetec, but I can't believe they play with the same one I own....after looking closely at Allison's, you can see her wrap is different....leather perhaps? I'm wondering about the shaft now...thunderbolt or something better perhaps? Anyone know?

haha, nice...goes to show all of us who worry about every little piece of equipment what you can do with the simple stuff...

actually Earl plays with a modified shaft ( no one will comment on the modified part of that) and Allisons is stock wood shaft just a little shorter than normal I believe, I took lessons from Allison and had a pretty good look at her cue.

Don't know about now, but 2 1/2 yrs ago, he was using shafts made by Cuetec. Not the shaft available to the public. His shafts aren't the 'bleached' white shafts, (SST) which are standard on their cues. His DOES have the figerglass coating, though. I have a few of his old sticks, but only ONE of those shafts.

I saw Allison's cue at the BCA Expo in New Orleans and it had a wood shaft, no coating.

earl has a very custom taper, that he won't tell anyone what type it is, the only thing he will say about the taper, is, it's the same dimensions as when he was a 16 year old kid, and he called himself earl the squirrel. as for allison her cue is 57 inches instead of the standard 58 inches. allison feels because she is 5 foot 2, she needs a shorter cue, than other people. she also plays with a moori tip. also, her wrap is the standard space age black cuetec wrap. her cue is exactly 18oz. her break cue is also, exactly 18 oz.

According to Earl, he gets a bunch of stock shafts, then has a guy shave the fiberglass coating off while pulling the taper just about to the joint.

Actually, I went and compared the shaft Earl uses (or DID use) with a SST (Stock) shaft. It's almost the SAME taper, hardly ANY difference at all. He did used to turn the shafts down some, not to bare wood though. It still has some of the coating on it. I NEVER saw him play with a 'stock' shaft.

As far as looking at a shaft and telling if it had a coating or not, you can't. You have to feel it, to detect it.

Cuetec sends him BOXES of sticks, he did go thru the shafts and hand select them.

Supposedly when you take the coat off of those fiberglass cues the shaft warps. A cuemaker told me that cuetech doesn't dry the wood very well, and the moisture is sealed in with the coating. When you take it off, the moisture comes out, and makes the shaft crooked. Are you sure they just didn't get a custom made shaft that is similar to the cuetechs shaft, but with wood? Maybe Blud can chime in on this.

What did you think of the lesson? She is expensive, so I wonder do, you think you got your moneys worth?

One more time....

I repeat...Earl does NOT take the finish off down to the wood. I'm sure if he did, they would warp. I have one of HIS shafts right here in front of me, that I got from HIM. It's just as I described, a Cuetec shaft with MOST of the coating off. It's stayed straight over 3 years now, so far.

Does "most of the coating off" make it any less stickier without a glove in humid conditions than "all of the coating on"? That's the primary rap I have with the cuetec shaft.

Longball,

I think that depends on the shooter, how much HE sweats. I know that is true here, where I live anyway. Today, we have 7% humidity here in Az. If you don't sweat a lot, you won't have a problem with the Cuetec shafts.

Some people sweat profusely, even just banging balls around. You know the guy...when you shake his hand..yours comes back dripping?

Earl did wear a glove for a short period, so apparently it bothered him at times too.

And NO, less coating is the same....

To your knowledge, has Cuetec been able to come out with a shaft that seals the graphite/fiberglass UNDER the wood and have the wood sheath completely untreated like a normal shaft? (other than shaft wax)

Rick S.,

This is my recollection, but I may be wrong. Earl preferred a longer taper than Cuetec offered so he would modify his shafts. Then they began making the SST, with the taper like Earl's , at his suggestion.

Wally,

That does make sense. I went and looked, ALL of the shafts I got from him are the SST shafts. ALL are the bleached white wood. With the exception of the one he used...it's a natural wood color w/coating, and without the SST lettering on it.

You can see why he needs a longer taper! With his normal bridge he's about 12 inches from the cue ball. An AWFULLY long way. That is how he generates so much spin. How he remains accurate that far away, is what I can't figure out.

Question for Rocky

I see that you took lessons from Alison Fisher and would like to know how that went. I see on her web site that she has a two day class for $1500. I'm toying with the idea of going (someday), what do you think?
