FLASH NEWS: Manila –Rising pool star Demosthenes Pulpul got off to a bright start by beating countryman Elvis Calasang, 9-3, at the start of the inaugural Philippine Open Pool championship, Thursday at the SM Megamalll, Megatrade Hall 2 in Mandaluyong City. Mario Tolentino & Victor Arpilleda also beat their respective rivals to spear headed the Filipino campaign. Tolentino downed Ernesto Dominguez, 9-6, while Arpilleda crushed Corey Deuel, 9-7. In other results: Shane Van Boening dealt Chan Keng Kwang, 9-5, Jeoung Young Hwa nipped Edgar Acaba, 9-7, while Kelly Fisher waylaid Timo Makela, 9-7.

Tolentino beats Souquet; Pulpul Score --- Mario Tolentino and Demosthenes Pulpul trounced their second round foes to boost their bids in the inaugural Philippine Open Pool Championship Wednesday at the SM Megamall, Megatrade Hall 2 in Mandaluyong City. Tolentino, a habitué of famous Star Billiards Center shocked WPA World No. 1 player Ralf Souquet of Germany, 9-6, while Pulpul, a semi-finalist in the 2008 World Ten Ball Championships defeated Kok Hon Keong of Singapore, 9-4, to set up their third round meeting. Meanwhile, US Open Women’s champion Kelly Fisher of the Great Britain also remain unbeaten after crushing former Southeast Asian Games Gold Medalist Victor Arpilleda, 9-7, in this US$84,000 total pot prize event using the double elimination format. Fisher, a 9-7 winner over Timo Makela of Finland in the opener will face the winner of the match between Gabe Owen of the United States and Jonni Fulcher of the Great Britain. Owen downed To Lian Han of Singapore, 9-8, while Owen waylaid Jericho Bañares, 9-2. Marlon Manalo, Jeffrey de Luna and Antonio Gabica, on the other hand, won their first round assignment. Manila – Antonio “Gaga” Gabica turned back Ibrahim Bin Amir of Malaysia, 9-2, to join three other Filipino in the winning column in the second round of inaugural Philippine Open (Ten Ball) Pool Championship on Thursday at the SM Megamall, Megatrade Hall 2 in Mandaluyong City, Metro Manila. Gabica, the 2006 Doha Asian Games 9-Ball Gold medallist will face Marcus Chamat of Sweden in the next round. Chamat beat Kuo Po-Cheng of Chinese-Taipei, 9-5. Earlier, Mario Tolentino, Demosthenes Pulpul and Jeffrey de Luna also kept the Philippine flag high after trouncing their respective rivals.

Tolentino beat WPA world No. 1 Ralf Souquet of Germany, 9-6, Pulpul crushed Kok Hon Keong of Singapore, 9-4, and De Luna nipped compatriot Jestoni Magadia, 9-2. However, Tolentino and Pulpul, playing under the banner of Cebuano sportsman-businessman Paul Monera Magadan of Magi Group and sponsored by MPC Trading will clash each other in the third round while De Luna will go up against Chang Pei-Wei of Chinese-Taipei, winner over Fabio Petroni of Italy, 9-6. The US$84,000 total pot prize event is applying a double elimination format with the champion getting the lion share of US$20,000.

Pulpul beats Tolentino; coast to fourth round – Demosthenes Pulpul breezed through the fourth round of the inaugural Philippine Open Pool Championship as he overcome his fellow Filipino opponent on Friday at the SM Megamall, Megatrade Hall 2 here. After winning his first two assignments, Pulpul, the 2008 World Ten Ball Championship Semi-Finalists played true to form beating national coach Mario Tolentino, 9-4, in the featured third round mathc. Antonio Gabica & Jeffrey De Luna, dropped their third round match in the winner’s bracket.

The Cebuano native Gabica bowed to Marcus Chamat of Sweden, 9-2, while De Luna was yielded to Chang Pei Wei of Chinese-Taipei, 9-2. Others who cruised to the fourth round were reigning us Open Women’s Champion Kelly Fisher, who downed Gabe Owen, 9-3, Ricky Yang, who beat Satoshi Kawabata, 9-6, Lui Hui Chan, who subdued Kop Pin Yi, 9-3, Rudi Susanto, who edged Shane Van Boening, 9-8, and Radoslaw Babica, who dealt current World Ten Ball Champion Darren Appleton, 9-6.

Also unbeaten were Lui Hui of Chinese-Taipei, who beat Rudi Susanto of Indonesia, 9-5, Radoslaw Babica of Poland, who clobbered Marcus Chamat of Sweden, 9-2, and Ricky Yang of Indonesia, who dealt Chang Pei-Wei of Chinese-Taipei, 9-6.

Then De Luna took three of the five racks for a 7-5 lead before Pulpul, top player of Magi Group and MPC Trading, tied the match at 7-all count winning the next two racks until the former (De Luna) didn’t go wasted time winning the last two racks to escape a narrow 9-7 victory and forged a championship duel over unbeaten Yang.

De Luna, who brought down compatriot Demosthenes Pulpul, 9-7, in an all-Filipino semi-finals affair, claimed a US$10,000 for his effort reaching the finals.
On the road to the finals by beating Kenichi Taguchi of Japan (9-2), Leonardo Didal of the Philippines (9-8), Satoshi Kawabata of Japan (9-6), Chang Pei Wei of Chinese-Taipei (9-6), Radoslaw Babica of Poland (9-7). De Luna who won his first two matches bowed to Chang (2-9) in the third round but won all his match in the losers’ bracket that includes current WPA World No. 1and 8-Ball champion Ralf Souquet of Germany (9-3), Oscar Dominguez of Mexico (9-4), Rudi Susanto of Indonesia (9-4) and Radoslaw Babica of Poland (9-5).
