Hey Melissa,

I vaguely remember reading a post you made some time ago talking about the tourney format the WPBA will be using in Florida. At least I think it was you that posted about it. :confused:

Anywho, I was hoping that you might be able to direct me to the appropriate thread. I did a search in your forum as well as on the whole message board, but to no avail. :( Or, if I'm just crazy, maybe you can tell us about it? :o

Hi there!

I do remember posting something about the Florida format....but I do not know where that post is, so I will recap it now.

We will be playing a normal double-elimination format until there are 16 players left....8 on the winners side and 8 on the losers. At this point, the players will be drawn into a single-elimination flow chart, with the 8 winners being "seeded" in so that they do not have to play each other right away.

This format is being used because ESPN gave us more hours...and the WPBA wanted an opportunity to showcase more players. Using this format, they will be able to get 8 players on TV (showing the 4 quarter-final matches)... instead of the normal 4 players per event.

It should be interesting!

Let me see if I "get this". (I tend to make things more complicated than they really are.)

So everyone that is in 9th-12th place on the one loss side swings back up to play the 8 players who are left on the winners bracket. The 8 players on the winners are seeded, thus one player on the winners side will play a player from the one loss side. The winner of the first match in the single elem round is guaranteed a TV spot. Am I close at all? Would the flow chart look something like this?? (With the red brackets representing TV matches.) If so how are they going to determine 3rd from 4th place?

And if you don't mind my asking, how are you feeling about this format?

(Sorry for the delay. I responded yesterday...but it looks like my reposnse never actually got posted. Weird :confused: )

It looks like you you have it figured out correctly.

As far as how I feel about the new format....I honestly haven't formed a complete opinion yet. On the one hand, I recognize that the format is unfair to the players who manage to stay in the winners bracket...because they have to go to a single-elim format and they could be eliminated after one loss when there might be others who had already lost who would get to advance. On the other hand, this could be a great opportunity for the players and the WPBA as a whole....so the benefits could outweight the negative. I really can't say until I get to Florida and play the whole thing out.

If I happen to be one of the B-side players who makes it to the single elim round...then I might like the format. If I happen to be one of the A-side players who makes it to the single-elim round and then gets knocked out...I will probably hate it....LOL.

Yeah, that is weird.
Thanx for your opinion though...I imagine alot of the players may feel that way, LOL. I guess everyone will know when it is done. I am still confused on how 3rd place is going to be separated from 4th place...seems they need another match or something if the brackets are formatted like my attachment.

It is my understanding that they will not be doing anything to separate 3rd from 4th. Instead, they will make some kind of modification to the points system for this event. I do not know exactly how that will work..but I can try to find out. If I get any more information, I will post it here for you.
