Focus & Concentration When You Are Dead Tired

10 percent?

Quite right. Ever read the nutritional label on a bottle of Gatorade? Lots of both sugar AND salt. (10% of it's total content) Not a good thing to guzzle regularly unless you are actually sweating it off. (Literally, not figuratively!)

I doubt it's 10% anything except water. Ever make KoolAid? try filling the pitcher with 10% sugar. To my un-educated eye, the nutritional label looks better than the Sprite I usually have to fall back on.

No, I don't sweat a lot, but like most of us that drink plenty of water, beer, or other liquids, you do get rid of it. I'm only looking for something besides soda pop to get some help. I don't play well with the caffeine, either.

Now, Powerade is loaded with fructose, but also 'infused with B-complex vitamins and electolytes'. And, that does seem to help this middle-aged body.

This is an interesting thread. I get up super early and work outside so I often show up to practice or play the weekly tournies I play dead tired from the start. I like to play so I go anyway. I am a big fan of Diet Cokes and Nutrigrain bars to keep me going while practicing and playing events. Oddly enough I always play better on my days off from work ;):D

Great Post

Can you all provide some more things to do during a match? I don't recognize I'm tired until I'm in a match. What tips/tricks do you recommend during these times?

Just two weekends ago I went through this. Thought I felt good waiting for my match, even felt good walking to the match. Then realized I was tired in the first game. Walking slower, missing shots, getting out of line, when just a couple of hours before, my previous match I played excellent.

Washing my face wont work for me (make up). Which fruit is best? I could eat that during my match I suppose. Anything else? There have been a lot of good suggestions so far. Thanks for the topic, JoeyA!

Apples, pears, plums- Practically any fruit will do except CITRUS IS NOT RECOMMENDED BY SOME.. I edit the first post in this thread as new ideas come on board. Get plenty of sleep in the days before your match. Rest in between matches, do a little yoga.
I am going to get a few more pool lessons myself. :-)

We have heard a lot of good tips to do before a tournament or match, but I'd still like to hear more of what I can do during a match.

Any suggestions on what I should do during a match to feel more energized and focused because of a long tournament day?

Thanks,
Melinda

Dead tired ...

When I am that tired, I just rely on instinct, but do try to pass a logical thought through my brain in difficult situations ... lol Keep your mind on the game on the table, and not other distractions around you or other people on the sidelines. Even when my opponent is shooting, I look for weaknesses he is displaying while running the balls off - Is he going to miss that shot because his shape won't be good enough? He is on the wrong side of that ball, which will affect him 2 balls later. Should I try to run the balls or play safe and get BIH when he reaches that stopping point?

When I was younger and tied up in long money matches, I used to down
3 or 4 cokes in a row to get a caffeine high and spurt of energy.

Scott, if this is what you think about when you're Dead Dog Tired, I hate to think what is going on in your head when you are fresh. :-) Good thoughts though. Thanks,
JoeyA

That's pretty funny, JoeyA! And I agree, good thoughts, Scott. Thank you.

Hi Everyone,

I played in a tournament this past weekend and was able to test some of the suggestions already from this thread. I planned ahead and went to sleep early on Friday night, but woke up about 11pm and couldn't go back to sleep for a while still. I wanted to feel more rested, but it was not to be as I had intended. :(

I left the house around 7am and arrived at the pool room about 9:15am. Play started at 10:30am and I was in the first round.

Long story short, it was about 6pm in the middle of my 3rd match and that's when I noticed I was getting tired. I grabbed a blue berry fruit bar from my pool case, and started to eat it, while washing it down with some water (not a caffeine drink). I was on the verge of winning the match and knew my next match was up right away, so I ate the rest of the bar for energy, as was recommended on this thread to eat fruit to help from being tired. Well, I noticed I didn't lose my focus as much and stayed in the match after I ate the fruit bar. I won that match and the next one to last until Sunday!

So, there's my status report and I want to thank everyone so much for their suggestions!

CONGRATULATIONS Melinda!
I don't know if a fruit bar is equivalent to an apple but just for the record, what was the exact type/brand of fruit bar that propelled you to win those matches?

Hi JoeyA,

The brand of fruit/cereal bars is called, "365 Organic Everyday Value™ " and only available at Whole Foods. My husband picked them up for me. He bought me the blueberry ones. They are all natural, organic, with no trans fat. He said he paid $1.69 for a box of 6. To be honest, they had the taste and texture of Fig Newtons, which I haven't had since I as a child and thought I didn't like anymore. ;)

Thanks Melinda,
I'm off to Whole Foods. I didn't realize they sold ANYTHING that cost less than $9.95.
