Focus

I realize that my pattern play is suspect but my pocketing and cue ball control is good (I think). What I am finding is that I don't run the balls even when they are well with in my means. I think somewhere I lose my focus and just cinch a shot and don't think of position or just don't bare down on the shot and miss what should be a routine shot which leads to missing routine run outs (regardless the game). Do you know of any exercises to work on ones focus???

Thanks Pete

Sure ....

Just go match up for all the money you have, and then when you lose it, and can only eat once every 4 days, you focus will improve rapidly.

Pete, you didn't mention how much practice time you put in. I would suggest practicing with 3 balls at first and trying to run them out in sequence. When you become proficient in running out 3 balls, try adding another ball or two to the drill.

If you miss a basic shot that was very makable, then try repeating the shot again. If you made the shot but lost position, then try it again and fine-tune your cue ball and speed control too. Practice makes perfect, as a wise man once said. :)

Just remember that no shot is a given, and give every shot the full attention that it deserves, that's what the pro's do. A drill for concentration is to line up 10-15 balls on the headstring, and shoot them into the bottom corners taking ball in hand each shot. It sounds pretty easy to make a few shots using ball in hand each time, but if you lose your focus, it is pretty easy to miss one. After you have mastered that drill, the real trick is transferring that concentration to your game play.

Is it "focus" you have trouble with or "thinking ahead" which is the trouble?

I can focus and aim/shoot correctly, pocket a ball. But then not "think ahead" and cue ball will go wherever it goes. This is a quick get up and shoot it without thinking type of thing. Then I look at my next shot (for the first time) and realize I now have a difficult bank shot!

Or I can "think ahead" about my next shot before shooting. Think about how I can make my shot *and* get the cue ball to go to a good spot for my next shot(s). Then focus to try and do this.

(Or play a safety if I don't think I can pocket my ball *and* get the cue ball where I want after the shot.)

a good preshot routine is important.........if you approach all shots the same you dont flub an easy one as much. Make focus part of the preshot.
