Foldes over Archer at the World Summit

Just got home from Slate. Left just after what will surely prove the match of the day, Johnny Archer vs Vilmos Foldes of Hungary, whose name I knew from his solid effort at the 2005 WPC, but whose game remained a mystery until tonight.

It was generally well played up to 7 - 6 in Archer's favor, when Foldes missed a tough chance to tie it at seven. when Archer got out for an 8 - 6 lead, he seemed to be in complete control. Archer jumped ahead to 10 - 7, and when Foldes scratched on the break, it looked like it might be over. However, the four only had half a pocket and Johnny wasn't quite up to it from about six feet away, with Foldes running out for 10 - 8. Archer broke, made a ball, and left the one fairly near the top corner, but Archer would have to play a swerve shot to pocket it. With the one so near the pocket, Archer correctly shunned the push option, and chose to play the swerve. Unfortunately, he slightly misjudged it and caught the edge of the obstructing ball. Moments later, Foldes ran out for 10 - 9. Foldes then broke and ran for 10 - 10, but Archer owned the final break. Archer's scratch on the final break proved fatal, as Foldes ran out for a truly spectacular 11 -10 victory.

This guy Foldes has a nice game, and his solid effort at the WPC is no longer a surprise to me.

FYI, Souquet led The One 4 - 3 when I left. Deuel beat Robles and Immonen led Basavich 8 - 4.

Thanks for the update. It looks like young Michael Tosado also held his own well against Archer (losing 10-7). I'd be very proud of that!

The kid is amazing. I was one of the spectators yelling, "Mikey!" at the top of my lungs everytime he got out. Later, it made me feel a little embarassed, but who would have done differently?

There is another Filipino kid playing the tournament. Runs around with Parica... Monster break, beautiful stroke, looks like Pagulayan in his fundamentals. Forget his name... I don't see him being 17 years old.

I've heard nothing but great things about Foldes, as mentioned he had a good performance at this year's WPC and won the world championship for juniors in 2003, his resume pretty much speaks for itself.
