Follow Shots With Object Ball Near The Rail

Hi AZB,

I was suprised how many of my students and also players who are playing for quite a while did not know, what happens with the cueball if you play a follow shot on a cut shot where the object ball is close to the rail.

Because of that I made a video lesson for all the players who don't know about that behaviour of the cueball:
https://youtu.be/RCv-Lu8oTxs

For everyone who doesn't want to watch the video, I am talking for example about a shot like that:

I am really curious. Did you already know that or was that something new for you? I always thought that's common sense.

I really enjoy your videos. One issue you might mention - if the object ball you are playing shape off of is deep enough in the pocket, you really have to be careful when considering after contact with the object ball, if the cue ball will be rebounding off of cushion rubber or pocket facing material. In the case of thicker pocket facings, near the pocket, the cue ball will be significantly deadened and altered from it's intended path if it hits off the pocket facing material as opposed to the cushion rubber. This needs to be considered when playing the shot.

Also, for the force follow shot demonstrated near the side pocket, an object ball sitting against the point can be struck very full and hard and compress the cushion that has a thinner 1/8-inch pocket facing to successfully pocket a ball. However, if the pocket facing is 3/16-inch or 1/4-inch, it becomes virtually impossible to execute this shot as you can't compress the cushion enough to force the ball through the point - the pocket facing material, even if it is neoprene, does not compress like the cushion rubber material does.

I think those shots should be common sense to any B- and higher player to pull off in game situations.

As for just sitting balls up and shooting, C level player should be able to accomplish in practice when set up by hand.

It always amazing me when onlookers cheer and make a big deal on said shots. Then again, that exactly what pool needs now, clueless onlookers willing to spend money on pool.
