Hi Gang,

Finally got my brand new Skip Weston cue in yesterday. Skip had sent me preliminary pics of the cue (which I posted here) before it was finished. It looks even better with the nice shiny clear-coat over it. Workmanship is always top-notch with Skip and its the same with this cue. With either shaft, the cue comes in at 18.9oz which I am very happy with. I prefer playing with lighter cues.

Speaking of which, it plays really nice. I think I'll be using this cue regularly for awhile. I'm very proud but humbled to say the cue created quite a stir among the local players when I showed up with it at my local room. Here are some pics, sorry for the dark and blurriness in some, my camera is old. Enjoy them nonetheless!

Real nice i hope you can run a lot of ballzzzz

Very nice. I like the simple, uncluttered lines. Do you have a shot of the butt? Any inlay work there?

The ebony sleeve with the ivory windows and ring is the butt of the cue. The butt cap is a simple white delrin piece.

Duh! I MISSED that photo entirely. That is a sweet cue. It is almost identical to a Danny Tibbetts cue that I have, except the colors of the veneers in the points and mine has an Ivory butt plate and doesn't have the ivory dashes in the butt, plus it has silver/black rings. The overall look of the cue is very similar. I appreciate the more intricately detailed cues, but I really like the simple ones like this. Nice choice.

I just noticed that yours is unwrapped. My Tibbets has an Irish linen wrap. I really like your cue...it's real clean-looking.

Thanks for the compliments. I prefer plain and simple shooters. Plus there is an old school style to the plain jane cues that I always like. Recently, I have been looking at fancy Tad and Ginacue cues. Old school, but definitely not plain with either of those cuemakers. We'll see what happens come Valley Forge. Hopefully I'll have enough money saved for one or both.

So you finally got it, congrats! The cue is beautiful, I'm sure it was worth the wait...

You got photos of your friend's cue as well? I'm waiting for a good camera to post pics of my Skip, but since we're averaging a Skip a month on this forum I guess mine can wait, lol!

Roger,

Funny you ask about my buddy's cue. We got the cues in at the same time (had them both sent to my place). He takes it out and we both made a goof face at the same time when we saw it. He chose to go with a white with black spec linen wrap and it did not look good on this cue, not good at all. So a quick call to Skip and it went right back in it's shipping box and Skip will be putting on a white with green spec linen wrap which I think is more suitable to the cue.

Still, my buddy's cue looked awesome. It was Skip's first time doing peacock inlays and they came out really really nice. The barbells on the butt-sleeve really gave the cue a very vintage and classy feel. I'll definitely post pics of it when he gets it back.

Better than the crap you hock! You ripoff artist!....hahaha Just Kidding bro, I wish I had half the stuff on your website...kills me everyday I look at it.

What a piece of junk Ricky!!!! Just kidding :) Nice cue bro....

Hey Eric, advice, put the prices up on the South Wests. Unless you have super high grade collectibles, the call for price is a waste of time. I know, I have tried it.
Unless you just need to talk to someone.. in that case, I have a good 900 number to save you the hassles :)

Hey Chef-

How does it play? Are you and your friend both satisfied? I'm curious because I just sold a Skip. It was a plain jane. Ebony forearm with tulipwood points. It was made in '97 and I had it refinished a few months ago. Now, I sold it because I personally didn't like the way it hit. However, I've hit with buddha162's Skip and that one plays fine. I like it a lot. I've toyed with the idea of ordering another Skip because his point work is top notch but I'm a little afraid of his consistency.

Joe, you have more experience with him. What's your input? Oh yeah, and why is it that I seldom if ever see anybody posting pics of Paul Fanelli cues? I think I might have to change that and post mine.

My experience with the hit of Skips cues are this.. certain wood / material combinations I just don't like. It could be a mental thing. But I feel the same way about any cues made from certain materials. I am not a curly maple forearm kind of guy, so I dissmiss them immediately. Ebony forearm's with steel joints, hate'em. So it may not be just Skips. But I will tell you I love the way Skips piloted ivory cues play.
Fanellis cues hit plenty good to. His butterfly cues are very unique.

Hey Joe,

Can you comment on how pronounced the difference is between a maple nosed vs. ebony nosed cue? Both cues flat-faced wood-wood joints. And Skip's in particular...

Thanks,
Roger

Roger,
The problem is I am not particulalry fond of forward weighted cues. Skip doesn't core, so his weight when he uses ebony as a nose tends to be a bit forward. Especially since I like a lighter cue. Paul Fanelli is building me a cue we will call the firefly, instead of the butterfly :) it is the first cue I am ording for myself with an ebony nose. I think we will use bamboo for a handle :)
When ebony is cored and sleeved with maple the weight and the hit is negated by the core. When a cuemakers does this it tells me he is happy with the hit of his maple cues, and doesn't want that to change from cue to cue. Capone comes to mind, and his consistancy cue to cue is amazing. This is because he engineers his cues for that reason. His ivory joints are just sleeves for appearance, not for change of hit.
But I like the change of hit and the flexability it gives cuemakers when using different forearm woods. It's really up to that particular cuemaker, and the customer to achieve the desired result.

I have to say that I was a bit skeptical myself when I ordered up my Skip. As I mentioned before, my buddy Jack already has one Skip. I've played with it and to me, it was okay. Its a flat-faced 3/8-10 pin joint, rosewood points into maple forearm. Nothing really phenomenal about it, but Jack had several other cues and he kept going back to the Skip because he liked the way it played. Plus, Jack just consistantly kicked my butt with his Skip.

Well, Jack decided he wanted another Skip, so I pigged backed on his 2nd order. I tell you, my piloted ivory joint Skip does not play like Jack's flat-faced one. I love the weight, the balance and the response of the cue. I am very happy with it. Bonus that it looks so nice too, haha.

To add to this, Jack's 2nd Skip is piloted metal joint and lighter than his 1st cue. Jack loves the inlay work Skip did on this new cue and he's very happy with the way it plays, Again, definitely different from Skip's wood to wood joint feel.
