Competition Format

Group Stages: 32 groups of 4 players each play round-robin (with each player playing other players once), giving three matches per player and six matches per group in total. All matches are race-to-8 alternate break, with two points for a win.

The top two in each group move forward to the knockout stages. Order is decided by total points, followed by most racks won, followed by most racks conceded, followed by the result of the match between players concerned.

Last 64 – race-to-10 racks, winner breaks.
Last 32 – race-to-10 racks, winner breaks.
Last 16 – race-to-11 racks, winner breaks
Quarter-Finals – race-to-11, racks winner break
Semi-Finals – race-to-11, racks winner breaks
The Final – race-to-17 racks, winner breaks

I don't see what was wrong with the old format they use for group stages where each player got seven matches. Three matches isn't very much, and why on earth do they need two days to play three matches?

Format ...

I don't like the format. I think it should start with races to 9, not 8.
Then go to 11, not 10. The last 16 through quarterfinals should be to 13.
The semi's should be to 15, and the final to 17.

It would be a much better progressive distribution as you progress up the ranks.

Considering the level of talent, the length of the races are questionable anyway. A race to 9 even is nothing for a world class player.

You make some valid points Scott, this is however, one of the better formats out there. Keep in mind they have to structure it to be TV friendly aswell, the finals are certainly set up so that the best player will win. Hey they could make the KO stages race to 7 alternating breaks:rolleyes:

I agree. I also thing they should make them all winners break.

But i just read on az's home page they changed the format again and are making all rounds ALTERNATE break. I guess matchroom sports wants to take the excitement out of the tournament.

We wont be seeing Archer up 7-4 late in the tourney just to have yang put a 7 pack to run out the set type of action that we pool players would pay to watch. Or somebody like manalo just dominating his opponents with a package here a lock up saftey then another package, or watching reyes put a 3 pack on archer just to see archer come with his own 3 pack then to watch reyes put another package up on the table. And quote unquote the press release says "so all players would have a even chance?" wtf? This is the WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP not your local handicap tournament races to 5 and shit to give everybody a even chance. I dont want to see one guy run out a rack. then the other guy come to run a rack. or to see one guy jump up 8-1 in a race to 9 the other guy dont have a chance to make a legendary come back .. and if he does its all about the luck and the opponent ****ing up.. not about how good a clutch player the guys is to put packages and safteys to get back in the match.

I wished somebody from Matchroom sports would tell me what the hell they are thinking:confused:

I especially like the part where it said:

"After much discussion with the WPA as well as other interested parties, it was felt that an alternate break format throughout would give all players an even chance."

Wouldn't it make a little more sense if the format was setup so that the best player has the best chance to win? I don't even understand why they had to change the format in the first place, what was wrong with the old format? If matchroom is trying to ruin one of the most prestigious events of the game they sure are doing a damn good job:(

I agree completely - the WPC has produced some thrilling knockout matches in the past, so if it isn't broken, why fix it?

In my (albeit fairly limited) experience, I can never ever recall being on the edge of my seat watching an alternate breaks match. I love seeing the great players come to the table when they're a long way down, and see if they can take control of the match.

I agree that it is daft to say that this gives all players an even chance - I actually think this weights things against the best players, as they lose the opportunity to take control of their matches

i like the AB format since in WB it doesn't matter if you are playing the dumbest or the best pool opponent as long as you can make good run out and have him planted on his chair.

in AB one can slug it out like in tennis or in chess match.
