and it's 14.1.

Hi all, first time in this section of AZB. A friend of mine was over the house last weekend, after getting bored with the same ole same ole games we usually play, he suggested straight pool. I've never played it before. But after going thru a few racks I've grown a great appreciation for this great game.

I enjoy playing it alone even more. Great practice. But I'm having problems with an effective break shot. I've tried only two different types. Break ball about a foot away from a side pocket, CB at an angle to try to break up the pack and break ball near second and third ball, side of pack, pocket in corner and break up pack that way. I'm just not that good at spreading the rack that well. Perhaps the old, cheap felt on my table is partial to blame. Not much roll as compared to Simonis cloth.

Any tips are greatly appreciated

Welcome to the game!! Not many people play it where I'm at. They usually run 8,9,10 ball and one pocket (another great game). There are a lot of vids on YouTube with shots to try. When I play for practice, I'll rack all 15 and go from there. A good break shot is the breaking ball between the mid point of the rack and the long rail and the cue ball just shy of the side pocket to hit the break ball into the corner and the cue ball into the rack. If you hit it right the ball will sink the cue ball will spread the rack and come back to the same rail. Take some experimenting to get it right. My main issue is leaving the object ball in a good break position and the cue ball in a good spot to break the rack and keep running.

My best run was 31. My break was weak and I luckily sunk one after but left my cue ball jammed up. It was a hell of a run though and since I then I have run a rack and a half but not consistently.

Good luck to you!

Hello and congrats on the new love. I just started playing myself recently so any advice I have is pretty basic. Do you use any English/spin? Have you tried moving the cue ball closer? What has helped me has been experimenting with angle, distance and spin of the cue ball.

Change the cloth, you will enjoy even more. Get some dvds from accu-stats with Ralf Souquet, Steve Mizerak, Rempe, and so on. Study their play.

On break shots sometimes less is more. Level smooth stroke with an accelerating cue ball. That is the opposite of smacking the balls.

Yes the felt needs replacing.

On a lighter note, I was watching Souquet two years ago at the derby, some guy in the stands was also watching while enjoying a bag of chips.

Crinkle crinkle, chomp chomp, crinkle crinkle....Ralf was not pleased. Asked him politely to be quiet.

Have some common sense pal.

Yes, Welcome to 14.1....... It will improve your other games that you play. As for break shots, try different one's from different places on the table. During matches all different spots come up but make sure that you are satisfied with a certain break shot before you move onto the next.

PS:..... I just had a nice 55 ball run.
