Pre Made Billets Trim Rings

PM Sent

I apologize if there is any confusion, but each set is $120. Thank you.

Ring work

I'm rather new at this and have a question about ring billets. I notice you make 3 different sizes. Why not make one size like 1.35 or so for the O.D.
and cut the slots deeper to fit the joint size? Thats how i do it, never thought of 3 sizes..
thanks

May i ask what you use to slot with zx24? Im murder on bits trying to go deep enough for all three. thanx

For most 'cutting bits', which are actually just mini end mills, the depth of cut is relative to bit dia.
A general rule of thumb is, 3 times the dia. of the bit is the max. depth of cut.

OK, let's go with this supposition for the sake of the following example.
You want a ring with 12, 18 or whatever number of slots and you want them to be 1/32" wide. That means that your max. depth of cut is .09375" per side.
Double that and subtract it from your starting dia. of 1.35".
By the time you've turned that installed ring to 1.1625, you've lost/removed your slots.
This obviously won't work for a shaft deco ring because most shafts are in the .840" dia. range. You've lost your slots at 1.1625".
Same thing applies for the 'A' jnt. ring (the 'C' ring position).
Most 'A' jnt dia. today are in the 1-1.050" range.
Again, you lost your slots at 1.1625.

OK, here's another reason not to start with a 1.35" dia. ring for a shaft.
As stated, most shafts are in the .840" range yet your ring is 1.35" dia.
Subtract your shaft dia. from your billet dia. and you quickly realize that you're turning more than 1/2" of billet dia. into chips.
That's quite a bit of waste, don't you think?
I want to make rings, not chips.

So, the closer to installed dia. that you can make the billets, the less waste you'll have and you'll also have the assurance that your slots are of sufficient depth. No chance of 'turn-out'.

I build a lot of billets for matching Predator shafts to custom cues.
My starting dia. for the billet I'm slotting is in the .870-.880" range.
I use tube, not rod. It's more efficient and less expensive.
I slot at a .075-.080" depth. This assures me adequate mtrl. UNDER the slot to support the integrity of the ring and there's no risk of turn-out.

The only down-side to making 3 different size billets is that it takes 3 times as long to make them. The countering up-side is that you can make 3 times the number of cues from your billets.

I have made about 8 ring billets since i started 18 Mths ago. I have only used 1/4" and 1/8" width bits so far. They are carbide router straight bits I got from ebay and are plenty long for my needs..I havn't tried the smaller slots yet, and since reading KJ's post i can now understand why 3 billets. I was wondering why the ring billets were so expensive to buy...As KJ said, 3 times the labor.. I sure wish i had a small cnc of some sort just to do ring billets...I hate doing them. Great info KJ, thanks alot

You're very welcome Max. That's why I'm here.
I share when I can and learn when I can.
No one knows it all, that's why we share.

Hello all Im new to this website and a little shy still.

Thank you KJ Cues for stepping up to the plate taking your time to write up all this valuable information for ZX24 and other upcoming cue makers.
Thanks again.

My bad! I somehow skipped over KJ's post. Back to building all 3 billets.
