Every hear of "The Atlantic Monthly"? I haven't either but a co-worker of my daughter brought her an article cut out of that magazine's March issue a great story of Efren "The Magician" Reyes and the Derby City Classic from this last Janurary. A great article written by Pat Jordan an author of 11 books ; the most recent a crime novel. Evidently this author was quite impressed with the DCC and the play and action he saw there.
The following a one small passage from that article that I never really knew as most of us didn't I suppose but I thought it was something forum members may get a kick out of hearing.

In 1985 a small brown man, a stranger, entered Red's pool hall and nightclub in Houston, Texas. He said he was Cezar Morales, and he offered to play all comers. Over the next twentyone days he played the best pool shooters in the Southwest, and won $81,000.
The players he beat argued among themselves about who was the best pool shooter, Cezar Morales or the legendary Efren Reyes. Shortly before he returned to the Philippines, they learned that Morales and Reyes were one and the same.

9er,
Well, I would have to say that the Atlantic Monthly is one of the most prestigious magazines in the world. Along with the New Yorker, it is a magazine in which most authors would die to see their work published. Very highbrow. JMO

At midnight on a bitterly cold January 15 the lobby of the Executive West Hotel near the Louisville, Kentucky, airport was crowded with men and a few women, all waiting anxiously for the guest of honor.

A man in a yellow windbreaker came through the front door and walked toward the registration desk. A murmur rose from the crowd. Everyone stared at him, a small brown man with slitlike eyes, a wispy Fu Manchu moustache, and no front teeth. He wore a soiled T-shirt and wrinkled, baggy jeans. He moved hunched over, his eyes lowered.

People clustered around him. Men flipped open their cell phones and called their friends to say "He's here!" They introduced him to their girlfriends. The man looked embarrassed. Another man thrust his cell phone at him and said, "Please say hello to my son; he's been waiting up all night." The small man mumbled a few words in broken English. Then the hotel clerk asked him his name. He said, "Reyes." Someone called out, "Just put down 'The Magician.'"

Well I prove once again I do not fall into the "prestigious" category but hope I am not in the highbrow one.

I am afraid that sounds like a good story but it is a bunch of BS. I was there at Red's when he showed up. It was for a tournament and he won the tournament under an assumed name but players knew who he was, and how he could play. Some time earlier he played Sigel rotation in Ca. and toasted him. . I don't recall any gambling by him He, by the way went for $100.00 in the calcutta. He stayed out of the room when the bidding was going on so no one knew who it was because of the fake name. How would you like to have a calcutta and Buddy Hall have someone put his name in as an unknown so he could go cheap. They should not have let him get away with it.
