For those who don’t know, USPS is now charging a $15 surcharge to ship anything over 30”.

I found it interesting that the ‘standard‘ medium triangular tube that they print and distribute is suddenly considered “nonstandard.”

You seem exactly right. I just did a practice package with my shipper. I did a 31" x 5" x 5" 1lb 15 ounces. Pretty much what it takes to ship a pool cue. USPS priority it should be $11.62 but it showed $26.62. There was a link saying that as of April 3rd there is a $15.00 charge for over 30".
I tried it again making the length 30". The rate was now $15.62 with a note saying there was a $4.00 charge for over 22"
I did one more with a larger box you could easily get a cue in, 30" x 6" x 8" and it stayed at $15.62
However, UPS 3 day select was only $13.02 with my shipper Pirateship.com
Conclusion, keep you package under 30" or less and there is only a $4.00 extra charge. This all went into effect April 3rd.
Whatever you do, don't walk into the post office and pay at the desk. You will pay the highest rate they have.
My test was for from south Florida to Colorado

When you use the service like pirateship you're still shipping with the post office or UPS but you just get better rates and everything is done right on your computer. What I like is such a complete history I can just look anything up if I'm sending a shipment to the same person one click and I'm ready to print the label.

I had my first experience with this on Friday. System showed+$15 for the "standard" triangle. I removed the tube but it was still +$15 as it came in at 31". Since it was still going to be +$15 I put the tube back into the triangle and sent it on its merry way.

Thanks for posting this. I ship a lot of the 37x7x6 triangular tubes in my eBay business, and this is the first I've heard of the rate increase. Not a word from eBay although all of my shipping is handled through them - typical. :(

Luckily, I hadn't shipped any that size this past week. I have now deleted Priority Mail as an option for all of my listings for items that take this size as the surcharge will make shipping via USPS more than double the cost of UPS or FedEx on this size. It's pretty apparent that the postal service doesn't want to handle anything but the little stuff. Now, what to do with the 125 or so triangular tubes I still have in stock.....

They're very easy to cut down and make 30 in. You sound experienced why do you do all your shipping and handling through eBay?

Well it another way to make money, never use UPS, as they and FedX do not provide insurance.

USPS is better IMHO, as you can purchase real insurance.
