G-Cue Viking tournament

Hello everyone. I just wanted to let everyone know what a great tournament it was this weekend at G-Cue Billiards in Chicago, IL. There were 50 players who decided to play even though it was mother's day weekend. I have said before that it is a beautiful room but now I can say that the tables in the room are the best I have ever played on. They are all 9' Gabriel tables. The rails are incredible, they have a certain arc to them that allows you to never be uncomfortable making a bridge off the rail. This was also the first tournament that I played in that used to red spotted Aramith cue balls. That was very interesting. As I was told by Jerry Briesath years ago "whitey never lies" and I found that out this weekend.

As for the finish, I cannot give a full update. I lost my first round 7-6 to a guy named Justin Daniels from Ohio I believe. He was in the final 4 of the winners bracket when I left. From there I won 4 matches, including wins over Jim Engles and Chris Conrad who are two of the better players in the area. I lost my final match to Tom Spencer who is a great player. I cannot complain about my finish, 9th place. I cashed again and made some progress.

Hopefully someone here or the AZ main page can give a better update. Sorry I couldn't get you the final three.

Take care,
Sarah

Good morning Sarah,

Is that the cue ball with the 6 spots on it? I played the other day at a guy's house that had a cue ball with an NFL logo on it. It really is strange to actually see the spin.

Congrats on cashing. Mike runs a good tournament don't you think? I may actually work up the nerve to play at one his Cincy stops this year. Maybe :D

Perez Celebrates o*n Viking Chicago Stop

By Tori Hilty, InsidePOOL staff

The Viking Cue 9-Ball Tour made a stop at G-Cue Restaurant & Billiards in Chicago, IL, for the grand opening tournament the weekend of May 8-9, 2004. A total of 49 players, many of whom were locals plus a couple of pros, showed up to check out the new room and have their go at a purse totaling $2,030. Bob Romano, promoter for the Midwest Open tour; Tom Spencer; Sara Rousey; and local Gil Hernandez were some of the faces that could be seen at the tables. Another first for the tour was the introduction of the Aramith Pro-Cup Six Red Dots ball, which was received very favorably by all of the players.

G-Cue is owned by pro player Tom Karabatsos and has been open for o*nly five weeks. This two-story building was o*nce a warehouse but has been renovated into an amazing facility that boasts a total of 26 Gabriel 9-foot tables--one player stated that they were "some of the best I've ever played o*n." There are also a few billiards tables. Spectators and players can take a break from the action in the o*ne of the two lounge areas and enjoy watching the flat-screen TV in a rich atmosphere created by the fireplace, aged brick walls, and mahogany floors. They can also enjoy ordering from a complete menu offered by the restaurant.

There were no real upsets o*n the first day of the tournament and o*nly a few key matches to watch. Hernandez, a local favorite, faced off against Henry Brodt and came out in the lead, 7-2. In another match, Justin Daniels, Youngstown, OH, native and fourth-place winner of last year's Viking Championship event, met Romano. Even though Romano was playing very well, Daniels took the win 7-5 and was the o*ne to watch in this event.

Daniels was zoning the whole way through the tournament when he met up with Sergio Perez in the hot seat match. He sent Sergio to the west side of the chart with a close score of 7-5. Perez met Duane Tuula o*n the o*ne-loss side after Tuula battled it out with Ed Flatt in the quarters, relegating Flatt to fourth with a strong 7-1 win. Tuula could not keep ahead had to accept the third-place spot with a hill-hill win by Perez.

Earning a rematch with Daniels, Perez was hot for revenge. It was a close match, with the score close until the very end. Perez came out victorious though, defeating Daniels for first place with a win of 7-5.

Results:

1st Sergio Perez

2nd Justin Daniels

3rd Duane Tuula

4th Ed Flatt

5th Gordy Van de Veer, Tom Spencer

7th Gil Hernandez, Tom Karabatsos

Hey Wally,

It is strange to see everything you are doing. There are no excuses to be made when something goes wrong.

You should play in the tournament. The entry fee isn't too high and the competition is great. Plus, going 2 and out is better than not trying at all.

Mike, thanks for the update.

Take care,
Sarah

Hi Sarah,
i was having dinner with Ralf Souquet two weeks ago during a Eurotour event and he said Gabriel's tables are his new sponsor and really great tables. My buddy is planning to buy some for his new poolhall, and i'm glad to hear your positive creditable opinion on them!

Good luck for your next tournaments,
Tom

Hi Tom,

I believe the Gabriel pool and billiard tables might possibly be the best table I have ever played on. It is unfortunate that they are so expensive. Not many rooms have them.

Good luck in your tournaments as well.

Sarah

Congratulations Sarah on your finish!!!

I really admire your attitude about the game, especially the part about (para-phrasing follows) it is more fun to get out there and compete then to sit on the sidelines.

I hope to someday take the active approach versus the passive approach. It is just tough to do with work and chores in the way and the fact that you regular players are just so good.

Keep it up and Congrats again. Jerry

Thank you Jerry.

It is understandable that you have other priorities in life and cannot play in the tournaments. It is fun though if you find the time. Don't be afraid to play. The way to look at it is playing at least two sets with new people or people you would not play otherwise.

Just an idea. Take care.
Sarah
