Gambling Ettiquite

You got a game to which you have the advantage and are about to play.
Then a railbird tells your opponent that he has not a very good chance.
Your opponent starts asking for all kinds of weight and pretty much you lose your fish.
Do you think it is proper for someone to stick thier 2 cents in if they have nothing to do with the bet?

Did your opponent deserve weight? In other words, were you trying to hustle this guy? There is a difference between gambling and hustling. If you are an honest gambler than it would not matter what the railbirds say.

Fair? Depends on the relationships involved. What's fair in gambling though? I always tell people that listen to railbirds to grow some heart. If they want to play and it's out of line then we adjust AFTER the first set.

Once upon a time a had a player try to knock another player's action by telling me I couldn't win. Why? Because the KNOCKER wanted my action instead. So I played the guy I "couldn't" beat for one hundred a game and offered side action to the knocker. I said since I "CAN'T WIN" why don't you take the lock bet? He declined to bet and I went on to play 300 a game one pocket with the guy I was playing and he pulled up when I was 900 winner.

THEN the knocker started barking at me so I played him ONE game getting 9:6 for 200 and snapped that off. Lovely little score there!

It sucks to get your action knocked if you were about to rob someone. But that goes with the territory. Personally, I feel guilty if I get in a game where the other guy has no chance so I usually don't care if someone tells him I am better. If I know I am better I jsut put it back on them and ask them what they think they need.

Most of the time they won't ask for enough weight to matter and if they do then the will often negotiate to lesser weight. Anytime someone bows up to play even against another player they don't know then they really want to satisfy their ego more than their bankroll. So in that case the knocker could do you a favor by casting doubt in the other player's mind about how good you really are.

i.e. what's worse, getting beat by a better player when you played even or getting beat after YOU asked for Weight?

You shouldn't be embarrassed, but you SHOULD watch out for a giant can of Miller Lite Beer to come down from above and crush you like a bug....
