GC 1 Need Help identifying

After a few weeks scouring Craiglist I bought a 9ft Gold Crown 1 for $900. The table was apart but is clearly in great shape. Formica wasnt dented and it apears to have been reclothed/taken down maybe 3 time in its entire life by the small amount of staples holes and fresh screw holes in the bed left when you rescrew down the slate. It is missing the apron and the guy I bought it from planned to buy replacements without finding anything. The person he bought from had replaced the original with some home made with particle board coverd nogahide. My searches on this table I discovered it was common for GC1 to have damaged aprons (Fiberglass?). The legs dont adjust, aluminum corner without ash trays. The underside of the rails have the figure 8 style backing plate another sign it is an early model. Rails are stenciled with MOD AR CSV and where the part it is located. The crazy thing is the head rail doesnt have a Brunswick Nameplate in the formica. My understanding is they came wth plastic ones and were broken because I see people wanting replacements. Search results tell me it should have a plate if it is really a Gold Crown. Is that true? I also started to read that AMF made GC Brunswick knock offs without nameplates. The ball rack does have a Brunswick lable but thats the only thing I can find. The legs are pained white and made of real wood. The slate is pinned and in good shape. He stored it vertically to prevent warping.

Sorry for the long post but can someone tell me if I can be sure it is a Gold Crown without that nameplate?

And also can I get replacement aprons? Could an apron from a 2 or 3 fit/adapted with a little work?

Thanks
Mike

GC1 should have a metal nameplate which is the same plate used on the matching GC cue rack if you can find one of those. GC 1/2 had hardwood aprons and plastic attaching skirts. The skirts were screwed along the bottom edge of each apron and were then fastened, by small metal brackets, to the baseframe. Properly attached, it is a firm, solid setup. The skirts add a nice finishing relief to the aprons.

First, ALL GC's came with a name plate inlaid into the head rail. You may have 2 foot rails with your table. Is there score counter inlaid into the foot rail of the table? Then, the side skirts on GC 1&2's were fitted into an aluminum slot on the underside of the rails, and hinged downward so to speak, then using 4 bar clamps with 2 bolts each, were held together in all 4 corners behind the drop pockets. How did the guy make the side skirts to attach to the rails? Yes, the side skirts from either the 1's or W's are interchangeable, but Brunswick did away with that system on the GC 3's, so you're out of luck there. The plastic extensions as I like to call them, were mainly needed as a way of hiding the bottoms of the drop pockets, as the side skirts were to short to hide them from being seen. I think you have a mixture of tables, which don't surprise me any.

It does have the counters and there is an aluminum strip on the underside of the rail. So without the nameplate this cant be a GC? The frame is well built and all the parts are clearly marked with original factory stencle or have stamped numbers to make sure of direction. He didnt take the apron that came with it when he bought it. Like I said they werent factory and he wanted back to original.

I have no doubt you have "most" of a GC, the question is, what, and where is the head rail that goes with that set of rails? Post some pic's.

My digital camera is gone (stolen). I will go out and buy a cheap one today so I can post. I am sure all the rails are original as a set but what table? I still need to travel to go get the slate today. The guy I bought it from seems knowlegeable about GC. He has a Big 8 GC3 setup in his house now and is selling it to make room for a 10ft GC he wants to restore.

Thanks
Mike
