Hey guys I have a black and chrome GCIII, and the tops of the rails are trashed - really scratched up. I got the table like this several years back. Thinking of getting new cushions put on there soon, and figure while I had the rails off it would be a good time to address the finish.
How would you guys approach this? I want to get a durable finish on there, but honestly, I would rather spend money on getting the table setup to play right instead of blowing a bunch of cash on the finish.
I am pretty handy, just inexperienced with finish stuff like this. I don't mind taking a shot at DIY, because I figure I can't screw it up bad enough that a pro couldn't fix it. So my plan is to try to do it myself, and if I botch it then take it to an auto paint shop or whoever can do the job right.
When I first got the table, I thought the issues were all in the clear, so I tried some rubbing compound which didn't get me there, which led to me trying both some spray can and brush on lacquer, and I didn't have much success with either. I have a good compressor and will invest a bit in a spray gun if I need to.
Im thinking now I will probably have to get the lacquer off and then re-spray the black and a new finish coat on top. I am looking for affordable and durable in the finish coat, if such a combo exists - and hopefully something that a newbie like me can get right if he takes his time.
What approach and products would you guys use?
