This is my best 3-cushion billiard with a level cue.

I've seen George Middleditch do this shot on the pool table and everyone I know credits it to him. But, in a discussion last night with a friend in the industry, there was some confusion about the shot's origin. Is it really George's? I know he's been doing it some 20+ years, but still.

Great Shot, keep up the 3 Cushion Billiard Artistic. Are you practicing on your own or are you getting any help from the Carom players beside Frankel?

Eric,

I don't know for sure who really invented the shot, but I first learned of it from Eddie Robin.

Seeing that video brought back a memory of one the weirdest things that ever happened to me in a pool room.

Back in the late 80's, I used to play every afternoon with the same guys. One day, we were talking and showing each other trick shots. I set up that exact shot and told everyone that I had seen Mike Massey do it on a practice table at the '83 Red's tourney in Houston. The response I got was, "Who's Mike Massey?" as most of these guys never got out of the pool room much and I was unable to do the shot due to the table being so slow. All I got was a lot of eye rolling out of the guys as they thought the shot wasn't possible.

The next afternoon, I was playing with the same bunch of guys and I happened to glance up toward the front door and who's standing there but Mike Massey. I about dropped my rocks!

I went over to Mike and introduced myself and found out he and a few other pros were in town to put on a private exhibition for some rich guy.
I invited him down to the table and after introducing him, told him about trying that shot the day before.

He stepped up and tossed the cue ball around the table, saw how slow it was and asked for someone to get him a piece of paper which he set under the first object ball to hold the spin long enough to make the shot.

He made it on the first try!

Well, Mike being Mike, he went on and put on a show for us for about an hour. He turned all the guys I played with into believers!

Talk about coincidence!

Good story! That's really cool.

And no, I'm not getting any help from anyone but Paul Frankel right now. I'll be working with Miguel Torres in NYC on March 22-24 though. I'm sure in three days I could learn from him what it would take years to learn on my own. I'll let you know how that turns out.

I saw George this weekend and diagramed the shot for him and asked him who invented it. Goerge said Harold Worst invented it.

And in typical George fashion added, "But I was the one that brought it to the bar box."

Thanks guys! Did Harold Wurst do it originally on a pool table or a billiard table? I'd like to say 40 years from now, "I brought it to the billiard table." ;)
