Still on the market for a new cue. I keep coming across gilbert jump break cues as being great players. I am starting to get kind of intrigued by them... What do all of you Gilbert owners like about them so much.

I am looking to buy a bacote sneaky and was set on a frey for a while. Gilbert(there is one on ebay that caught my fancy) and Mohawk(a friend has a cocobolo plain jane for 200) are starting to inch into my head lately. i am going to go and try out the mohawk this weekend even though I have not heard great things about them. my buddy says it plays great, I just hope it rolls straight from what I heard...

I have a Gilbert 3 piece, and it's one of the better playing cues I've ever owned. Although, I don't use it for play, often times after I break with it and I get a really good break and a fairly easy 'cosmo' lay, rather than returning to my seat to get my main cue and risk breaking my rythm, I'll just play the rack out with my Gilbert. Although it has alot to do with the fact that I use it to play out racks that are spread well and fairly easy, I'm pretty sure that my Gilbert has more run outs from break than my main playing cue does. I trust that cue well enough to take it anywhere with me as my main stick particularly in the case of going someplace where I might worry about my main cue being stolen.

You read right Fred...first time I heard that term was 25 yrs ago, its a popular term for an easy run out {for those that never heard it}. Danny Diliberto uses the term often...
 
I played with a Mohawk from '94-'03 then I bought my Gilbert after hitting with Saez's. I loved them both. There was a hollow sound that I really loved about the Mohawk when I hit with it. The Gilbert is unexplainable. Everyone who has hit with my Gilbert has loved the way it hit. You should really try hitting with one if you get the chance. The Mohawk would be a good buy if in fact it is straight. A friend of mine is fixing one that I bought off Ebay. The Butt is warped. I also found out that the Mohawks are one piece from joint to butt.

Danny explained the origin of the term on an accu-stats tape I was watching. Apparently Tom Cosmo in addition to being a pool player did exhibitions and was a dancer. Part of his exhibition was to setup an easy layout and go into a dance rountine which he did well he ran out. Hence the term "Cosmo", a runout so easy you can dance through it.
 
From what I have heard, Tom Cosmo did his dance/pool routine not only with an easy lay, but a lay that set up to be able to run out with nothing but stop shots (lot's of the same kinda stuff in The Color of Money scenes where Tom turns his head away from the shot and makes it without looking). From then on, calling a spread "Cosmo" meant an easy lay that can be run out with little or no non natural cue ball movement.

I have never heard of that in 45 years of playing. When I grew up, yes in Dodge City, we called them 'punchboards', which was slang for 'town punch' (yes, it means what you think), which meant you had an easy lay.
 
It's entirely possible that my ebony J/B hits better than the 6-pointer (both Gilberts...). Not that the other cue is bad, it just that dang thing hits, well, solid. Like Tokyo Dave, I have often used the J/B to run out the Cosmo's.

I bought a Gilbert PJ earlier this year when his JBs and PJs were pretty comparable in pricing, and I have NEVER REGRETTED ever since. I was looking for a cue that hit very solid and stiff, and the gilbert was perfect for me. I hate whippy cues.

I've tried a friend's Gilbert JB and the hit was very comparable. The only reasons I didn't get that was cos I wanted something with a wrap, and I was
uncomfortable playing with a JB cue. I feel Gilberts break very well cos of their stiff taper.
 
I have owned several gilberts and hit with several more, I like the way any of the cues play, really stiff hit. I believe the gilbert j/b would be a real great choice for an all around cue

I've got an 8-point j/b with a wrap. You just have to order it...lol.

Yea I think I've seen that before, looks pretty darn good too!

Well I really didn't want to wait for a new cue....I was on the verge on actually committing on my order, and then a ready made one just fell onto my lap!
