do you guys use gloves when you play? i am in my first league now, and i'm doing alright, about average intermediate i guess but i see people with gloves and i wonder if i should try it. i do have some trouble with my hands getting a little sweaty sometimes and i dont use chalk because i have heard it is bad for the stick. my only problem is that like i said i'm pretty average and i feel like i would look stupid, but if its really that helpful i will try it...

Really looks professional, but its better to focus on the practical aspects. I worn them for a while but discarded them long ago, sweaty palms just wipe more often.

I wonder if anyone uses a glove just for league/tournament matches. I can get away with not wearing one, but it might be helpful sometimes. I wonder if not practicing with one and then using it for a match might throw me off. I guess there's only one way to find out.

id rather wear mittens with a hole for the bridge. never in my life am i wearing a pool glove ever.

I've seen people playing with fancy cues and cannot make a ball and people pulling out a BK2 and cannot even break the rack apart. I call those bad investments.

Spending $10 on a pool glove gives you ultra smooth bridge (if you don't mind not feeling the wood). That is a good investment.

yeah

it's all I need.

seriously though, I keep one in my bag just in case.
Can't remember the last time I used it though.

But if one gets that ultra smooth bridge still cannot make a ball or break a rack is still bad investments right? Not trying to refute but JMHO.

The thing is with a glove it's actually not as smooth as when my hand is dry and the shaft is clean, but it's better than when my hand sweats a little.

I prefer not to wear one, but all the rabid anti-glovites are lucky enough not to sweat so they see it as an unnecessarily frill.

If you think a glove might help you then get a glove and try it out. Why should you care what other people think or how it looks?

I used a glove for a while and I didn't like the way it reduced the amount of tactile feedback or "feel" that makes for accurate speed calculations and is crucial in finesse shots. OTOH, I know some very good players who use a glove and love it.

The bottom line is you'll never know if a glove will help you or hinder your performance until you try it. If it works for you hey that's great, if not you're only out the chump change you paid for it.

What I do now is I wash my hands and dry them completely. I then apply a little Purell hand sanitizer work it all over my hands and wipe them dry with a terrycloth handtowel I keep in my case just for that purpose. If my hands start to feel sticky after playing for a while I just do the hand sanitizer thing again and presto-- I'm good to go.

You know I run and pretty slowly now that I'm getting older and when I get a shiny new pair of fast looking running shoes, I wonder if people are thinking what's he got those nice shoes for, he's so slow. But you know what screw 'em, I need new shoes now and again.
If you think a glove will help your game, try it. If it helps, keep it. If it doesn't, dump it. Whatever you do don't decide what to do by how you'll look. I bet you wanted to join a league a lot sooner too, but didn't because you thought you couldn't play; now don't you wish you had joined sooner.
I tried one and really missed the feel of the cue in determing cue speed, etc. I got rid of it, but there are plenty of fine players who wear one all the time (well not when they're making love :D ).

I always keep a glove in my case. I use it out of necessity, if it's too humid and too hot in the room it comes out. Wiping you hand down only does soo much and its a waste of time to go to the restroom to wash your hands ever 15 mins.

I used to wear a glove back when I VERY first started playing pool on the BB's at the local movie theater... The sticks were filthy and the room was very humid, so it helped...

As far as playing in a 'normal' (is there such a thing?) pool hall with a decent house stick, or your own playing cue... I've never had a problem with hand perspiration, so I've never really needed it, and I think they look funny... I will clown on you if I see you wearing one...
Obviously they help some people. And there are a bunch of pro's who use them... so if you need it, you need it...

I don't think I'd be as comfortable with one, so I doubt I'd ever wear one.

My hands sweat a lot when I play. I was constantly running to the sink and washing my hands and wiping down my stick. I bought a glove and it helped my game, nice smooth stroke. It helped me to actually focus on my stroke rather than my bridge grabbing the shaft. If you decide to get one try one of these, they're the ones I use and they're excellent IMO.

thanks for the replies guys, for now i think i'll try keeping a soft towel with me to dry my hands as some of you have mentioned, but catscradle you are very right, i was nervous about joining because i thought everyone would be really good and i wouldnt be able to learn because they would be way out of my league, now i wish i had done it earlier because i am able to be competitive even if i lose, and i'm learning alot. most of the people are friendly and helpful.

i would give the glove a try for a couple of weeks. it might just be one of the best things you ever do. it'll give you the smooothest stroke possible. and unless your hand is dead, u can feel the cue just nicely indeed!

I just may buy me a glove. I already have a flourescent yellow McDermott case, bright purple Meucci, and a jacket with all of my APA "break and run" patches embroidered on it. Talk about getting action out of town. Well....

I don't but I wouldn't have a problem using one if it helped me.

Some of the best players in the world keep one in thier bag just incase and will use it if the need arises.

The only thing really stupid about it to me would be losing a match because of fashion. ;)
