Glue for V-Groove Points

I've been using Titebond wood glue for my V-Groove points. I need to replay the video, but I'm almost sure that is what Chris Hightower used in his cuemaking video. Also, in his cuemaking book, he states..."mix up your West System OR get out your wood glue".

Recently I've run across threads on the subject and it seems everyone says to ONLY use epoxy (West System specifically).

Does anyone else use wood glue? Are my wood glue points going to fail?

Let's hear opinions.

Over the years there have been many a point glued in with wood glue. Look at the Szamboti blanks that Deno put up in the cue gallery.

I use epoxy because that is what I laminate my veneers with. That way I use one glue and I don't have to worry about compatability or future adhesion issues.

Wood glue works fine if done right, but epoxies are more forgiving and require less cure time. Epoxies will create a strong bond even if the surfaces aren't prepped perfectly, or if there is insufficient clamping pressure. Glue lines are also less apparent w/ epoxy, but we hope not to have any of those, right?

Funny you should say that. I've actually had more problem with glue lines using epoxy than with wood glue.

Thanks Murray!

If it's good enough for Gus, it's good enough for me. Now if I could only duplicate his quality:p

What kind of 'poxy did you use? The hardware store brands are too thick for point work.

I've never used epoxy for points. I've always used Titebond premium wood glue and have never had a noticeable glue line.

I use Devcon 2 Ton for joints, rings, inlays, butt caps and for attaching the forearm to the handle. In most cases the glue joint is hardly noticeable, but sometimes it is. The worst problem I had was with some stitch rings using a mahogany type of wood with ebony. The glue lines were very evident where the mahogany met and ruined the effect.

I just assumed my choice of wood was the problem (too porous) or the rings were not cut perfectly flat, but it may have been that the epoxy was too thick. I did get it at the hardware store :o

Is Devcon a bad choice?
