Hello all,

What are your best options for glueing in your points into the forearm? I have used tight bond and west system and they both seem to work great. Just looking for opinions. Thank you.

You hit the nail on the head, it all works well. Have you gotten Hightowers book yet? He goes over all of this in his book.

Years ago I used TiteBond wood glue for veneers and sometimes gluing in points. Wood glue is actually stronger than the wood it is gluing if everything is right. After thinking about it for awhile I decided that glue is cheap compared to what is involved in fixing if all doesn't go right. I now use West System epoxy on my veneers and in gluing in the points. I've worked on to many older Titleist and Adams and such where the points have come loose that now I take no chances.

Dick brings up some more questions. Does anyone know for sure what Titelist or Adams used. Also, does anyone know it titebond has updated it's formula over the years. Only concern I have with west on gluing in points is joint starvation if you squeeze the points to much. I use west for gluing up veneers, but have stayed with wood glue for installing the points. Always interested in new ideas.

Glueing Points Or Whatever

The August issue of Fine Woodworking has a shoot-out about glues and their relative strengths. To sumit up: Type 1 PVA (waterproof Titebond) had an average joint strength of "2024" and slow-set epoxy a rating of "1994". Titebond won!

Do you use Titebond to glue in all your points, including exotics? If so, do you do any special prep on the oily woods?

Thanks,
Rodney

I acetone all the exotics before I use the titebond. Probably not necessary if you use epoxy, then again, it can't hurt. I haven't had any trouble using titebond to glue in veneers that were laminated together with west.

207 is clearer than 205 & 206.

Thanks Bob
I found it today just had to read a little.

207 Special Coating Hardener

Product highlights: 207 Hardener
This hardener was especially developed for use with WEST SYSTEM Brand 105 Resin in coating applications where an exceptionally clear, moisture-resistant, natural wood finish is desired. Cures to a light amber color, similar to traditional spar varnishes. An ultraviolet inhibiting additive improves the resistance of a WEST SYSTEM 105/207 mixture to sunlight, but the cured epoxy surface will still require the additional protection of a quality UV-filtering varnish. 207 is designed to self level for smooth finishes, and to wet-out and bond fabrics. Although it provides good physical properties for general bonding applications, it is more difficult to thicken and less cost effective for this purpose than 205 or 206 Hardeners. It’s also used for laminating veneers where bleed through at joints may be exposed to sunlight.
