Gold Crown 1 rehab. Lots of questions...

Seems a fair bet that the same person leveled the slate, can probably imagine how that turned out. From the looks of things the same guy set up the pockets too....

The repair work on the rails is coming along pretty good, got the Maple veneer on the first piece last night. Now to find a stain color I likeView attachment 835466
Cool. Did you index where the rail sites go?

The formica came off intact so I have that to get the locations from. Will need new inlays. I like the look of diamond better than round, but more work to install. I haven't even looked to see what's available, Probably can get any shape I want. There's also the name plate, don't know whether I want to use the badly worn old one, get a reproduction, or neither.

Mission creep....

Beautiful work!

First, If you have room for it, a good table saw. Cabinet grade, stay away from the contractor saws. New is pricey, but an old Powermatic model 66 or Rockwell/Delta Unisaw can be had on the used market for considerably less.

I tried to get him to buy an SCMI S15 short slider a few years ago :)
(Not mine, either, they just used to be common on the market for very low $$.)
Those and larger Rockwell-Delta 12-14 size cabinet saw.

Nice saw if you've got the space and three phase power.

All of the veneer I am using on this table was cut from the same log.

What makes it special is the way you matched pieces from different areas of the log, right straight across!
Starting with a book match at center.
Nice work.

This is the front and back of the panels for the second leg. Some sanding and fitting left to do but this is what they look like after the veneer panel is glued to the plywood. There are six pieces of veneer in each of these. The veneer is edge glued into a panel big enough to get the finished panel from then glued to the plywood. I did not get any pictures of that part. The veneer panel is glued to the plywood in a vacuum press.

How thick was that veneer you used on the rails and where did you source it from? Looking at doing mine and might have some questions for you as you definitely know what you are doing as obvious in the pictures. Thanks

I got it from Certainly Wood. They will sell veneer in any quantity you want. At their web site the veneer is sold in batches that are all from one log. They lay it out and take pictures so you can see the exact veneer you are buying. I used 1/16" Hard Maple, it's about the same thickness as the formica I took off. You can find it under "Special thickness veneers"
