Gold Crown Side Pocket - Facings?

i am not sure that "Facings" is the right word to use here. i am talking about that which covers the edge of the cushion on your pockets, the part that the ball actually hits when it either falls into or rattles around the pocket.

yes, it is covered with cloth, but i think the cushion itself has something different than rubber on it. isnt that what is called the Facing? either way, that is what i am talking about.

my Gold Crown IV, according to my table mechanic, has Charcoal for the facings covering the cushion. he says if it wasnt covered with this the pocket would give you a "Pin-Ball Effect" and thats not good.

however, i still seem to have balls hit the sides of the Side Pockets, and just pop out all the time. does anyone have any thoughts here on this? is Charcoal what is commonly used? can it be replaced with something that wont spit the balls out as much?

do you know what is on your GCIV?

It has to do more with the angle of the pocket facing. Diamonds use 142 degrees. GC's usually have a more shallow angle (>142) especially when shimmed.

My table at home is 139 degrees. Balls hardly ever bobble unless they hit the corner of the pocket. They are either in or out.

Another thing to note is if the facings are convex they will spit out more balls when shooting close too the rail also. There are many shimmed GC IV's around here and a lot of people don't like them cause balls that should go don't. The pockets look bigger than they really are and you cannot make a ball with any speed on it unless you hit it absolutely perfect.

.

DCP,
NO. I do know, though, that there is a piece of material tacked on the end of each cushion on the standard setup; and that I have TWO of those pieces (whatever they are) on the end of each cushion (thus the term "double-shimmed").

My guess is that it is a hard rubber; but I don't know the exact chemical consistency of it.

P.S. - Since my cloth got older, I agree with mnShooter that you have to be EXTREMELY precise to pocket any hard-hit balls down the rail.

well, i am mostly talking about the side pockets. my GCIV just constantly spits balls out when they hit the facings of the side pockets. my corner pockets seem to be okay for the most part.

i am just wondering if there is anything else besides Charcoal that could be put onto the side pocket facings that might "deaden" it a little bit, and thus more of these shots might fall in instead of popping out.

Here is an idea no matter what it is.

DCP -You could sand whatever the material is to make it concave or convext - (whichever is the correct term for making a curve). Make the center of the pocket facing with a little well in the center. This will help it take (instead of spitting out) balls.

OHB,
I think he better be very careful if he trys that; it can end up badly if done wrong. The corner pockets on our table at the crummy pool hall in Peoria had the facings tampered with; there was a depression in the center. Any ball hitting directly into the depression would bounce out, even if the whole ball was within the jaws of the pocket - FREAKISH. Nobody wants to play on a table like that, no ball along the rail could be made without an extreme slow roll - you might as well be playing bumper pool.

In my limited experience side pockets will often spit out balls that are hit 'too hard' into the facings (ie not at the dead center of the side pocket). This is one of the tests I do on a strange-to-me table, try to determin how hard a shot the side pocket will take when 'cheating' a little bit. Tables are different, but I would not think that a GCIV is somehow different or special or haunted or possesed. It may just be that hard shots to a side pocket will get spit out if not dead center. I've seen this on many different tables. Having said that, if very gentle off-dead-center shots are being spit out, you may need an exorcism.
