Golf makes pool seem like Childs play.

I do, however, love a good proposition bet. So if you can find me a golfer of Corey's age who has never played pool and both gentlemen attempt to change sports, I'll make a pretty good sized wager that, say in 5 years, Corey'll do better at golf than the other young man will do at pool. Or we can take a man of roughly my age, 60ish, that is in good shape but has never played golf and I think he could, within one year, break 80. Now this wouldn't be a course like the pros play but an easy municipal course.

Grady...I would take either one of those bets in a heartbeat, especially the one with the guy who is 60ish that never played golf, although some degree of difficulty on a course would have to be established. But, we have a problem and the bet would never come off. First off, if a guy is 60 and never even tried the game, he's not going to start so we'll never find that character.
However, he still doesn't stand a chance.

And as far as the young guy changing careers, I think the well coordinated young man switching to pool would have a better chance than Corey, especially if he could spend EVERYDAY for 5 years with a wily old veteran and instructor like yourself. But that never happens because most don't even go to a regular instructor. Also, why would they go from a sport that has tons of prize money potential to one that doesn't. So we won't find that character either. Seriously, you don't think that someone learning from you, Allen Hopkins, Mike Sigel, or a host of other players, couldn't make it to the top if they devoted themselves and their time to pool 8 hours a day?

I will tell you a bet that we WON'T make...and that's you and I matching up even, or close to it. You always were and still are a playing sumbitch. But, if you want to do a trade off for lessons with each other, I'll make YOU a better golfer at 60ish and you can do likewise for me in pool......deal?? Yes, I'm a pro.

Very funny, DM! Five years, two kids and still heart palpitations, what can I say? The kids sent my game into limbo for a while, but see my new column here on AZB for more on that!! :D (On the Home page under "Latest Columns.")

Now, back to the golf/pool thread already!!

Golf vs Pool

You don't say where you are from, Capt.? With logic, I could prove that pool is at least as hard as golf. There are a couple of golf pros, good ones, who didn't even start until their late twenties. In pool I heard of that happening once.
The talent at golf and pool is about 95 per cent man-made and 5 per cent God-given.Tiger and Daly being able to hit a driver and eight iron to par fives gives them a decided advantage over the Corey Pavins of the golf world. By the same token, Archer and Bustamonte are huge favorites over most 9 Ball players because of their break shots.Of course, through this discussion I don't give 9 Ball equal difficulty rating with One Pocket.
As far as the 61 year old breaking 80, I might try myself but it wouldn't be worth the effort for less than say, $150,000. I might add that I think I would know how to improve rapidly at golf because of my years of training at pool.I'd be at it 10 hours a day for the whole year, starting with mostly the short game.
We can continue this another time, maybe over dinner somewhere. I'm not allowed a little toddy either.

Many talented athletes, over the last 60 0r so years, have tried to excel at pool and golf. None played both at the championship level.

I think it would be impossible to excel in both to the championship level. Not enough time in a day. Reminds me of a post I made in another thread.

This brings to mind the real problem with my pool game. I've spread myself way to thin. Very good at to many things

Pool - (do fairly well)
Table Tennis - (been a while, but unless you play very well, you don't want to tangle with me in this)
Music - (been playing piano for 45 years. Still play for an hour or so every day. Like elevator music?) http://robertsdigitography.com/CaptJRs/music/music.htm
Golf - (handicap 6, not bad for an armature)
Dance - (North Eastern US Dance title, Top Teacher Arthur Murray's, ya I guess I'm mention the year, 1977, but I still dance)
Target Shooting (Vietnam 1969-70)

Why didn't I take all that time and energy, put it into just one of those categories and become the best? gezzzzz!

Oh, That is 6 competition categories. Could be a tie 3 to 3. I'm glad I saved what I'm best at for the 7th category and playoff.

I'm right across the state line from you...SC-GA.
A couple of posts ago I said the same thing about the difficulty factor in so many words. And that is, once you get to a very good amateur level or just break in as a pro, that the distance you have to travel from that point on to the top of the mountain is greater than all the rest and exponentially more difficult in both sports. It seems so easy because you can beat 95% or more of the population and the ring is right there within your grasp...but you can still be light years away. Both are brutal...
Dinner sounds great.

:D :D :D :D OOOOKAY....I believe you. :D :D :D
Dr. Drivermaker's diagnosis is, the kids are giving you the tachycardia and in due time you might be confusing the burn with the beat from the hubster... :D (I think I've been watching too much Dr. Phil)
Whatever...keep dropping balls and be happy!

Your statement "equally difficult" is probably as close to accurate as anyone can get. Rational arguments could be made to lean either way but anyone in the know in both sports would see the enormous difficulties required to excel.

From my experiences, I would say that pool is much tougher on me mentally than golf. I have done my share of winning at both and it is always fun to win. I have also done my share of losing at both and the defeats in pool can be a lot more crushing for some reason.
