Good hit?

This weekend I was playing 8 ball. My opponent had solids and left himself with this shot. The 13 is my ball with maybe enough space to make the shot legally. I asked for a ref. So he hit the cueball hard, made the 8 and the cue ball ended up at A.

Was this a good hit? How do you tell if it's a good hit or not?

I really don't think we can tell by this, but a double kiss on the 8 would have made it.

So are you telling us that your ball ended up at B?

What were the paths of the balls after contact?

The cueball went one rail to A. There was no double kiss. Ignore B.

Judgements are made by watching the cue balls path immediately after contact with the object ball. It should travel down the tangent line.

If the 8 Ball is hit first and cut to the right, the tangent line is to the left, and the cue ball will move to the left of the line of aim. If it the 13 ball first, the tangent line is to the right, cue ball would move to the right of the line of aim.

A good place to watch this shot is directly behind the shooter on the line of aim. Small movements are noticeable from that position. If you stand off the line of aim, it is difficult, or impossible, to see accurately what happened.

What happened to the 13 is the key.
If the 13 started moving straight up table, that would indicate the cue hit it first
If the 13 started moving away from the eight, that would indicate that the cueball hit the eight first, then backed into the 13

IF there wa no room for a ball to fit between them, then it is not likely. If there was, and the cue ball had a lot of spin, it is possible that it might have made it in there rattling. However, smart move on the part of the shooter to hit it real hard, so it was not possible to see what really happened. Inconclusive counts as good.

The kiss off of your ball would have been a more likely way to make it. From your pic, it still looks like it needs the double kiss.

I tired it on my table and made it with the double kiss only. But I do have 4.75inch pockets.

Really needed to see it live. This is tough to call on here.

I've noticed over the years that the definition of a good hit has changed. It seems universally accepted now that if the object ball and another ball are hit simultaneously, it's considered a good hit (i.e. tie goes to the runner). Years ago, the object ball had to be clearly contacted first to avoid the foul. Anybody else agree with this, or am I having another senior moment?

Ok the shot has just enough room to make the 8 with a good hit and left spin. I tried the shot a few times from a closer position and when I hit the 8 first the cueball went to B. When I hit the 7 first the cueball went to A.

Watching where the 13 goes is also a good indicator. I didn't see where the 13 went but I believe it went up the table.

The reason a good hit goes to B instead of A is because it caroms left off the 8 and then right off the 13 to point B.

I really think this should be common knowledge. Especially for a ref. I've seen refs around here that can't even recognize a double hit when the cue ball is going at mach 7 after the hit. In short I got a bad call and am not very happy about it.

First off good leave, I have had bad calls on me before and it hurts, but oh well. I agree with Donovan on the double kiss.
