Good idea?? Yes? No? Maybe?

I recently signed up for a promo deal where I get a free laptop. This was a little over a week ago & they said it could take up to 4 weeks so I'm currently holding my breath but.... If it does in fact arrive, I plan on getting a cellular card to where I can get internet service anywhere I can get a cellular signal. (I'm thinking this will be great at the Open & the DCC)

The AZ room is down a hallway and the room itself doesn't have any windows but I was able to get service with my current provider. If I can get service with my new provider in the room, I was thinking about getting a cheap webcam from Walmart and setting it up in the room.

We could broadcast our mini tournaments, challenge matches, show off our cues... all that fun stuff. Whatta ya think?? Do you computer guru's think it would work?? Would it be something those of you not able to make it would be interested in???
 
I'm bumping this so that it shows on the main page... I'm curious to hear what you guys think...

The way I invision it is to turn the computer on, plug in the webcam, set them up on the table and be done with it.... Doesn't sound like a lot of work to me. Of course I won't know until I get there what it would entail for sure. ;)
 
Of course there's the matter of bandwidth and who would host this. I'm not sure how much bandwidth a small webcam (320x240 or so?) would take up, but depending on how many hits one gets, it might be pretty big. Heck, I remember AZBilliards.com going down at the last DCC! :p

I was thinking something simple like yahoo....
 
I use my Verizon wireless phone with blutooth, and a bluetooth adapter in my laptop, to gain Internet access. It works OK for me. As mentioned, the bandwidth will be your problem. In Virginia Beach and in Louisville, I was only getting around 284K speed, and video will work, but at such a low resolution, action-(refresh rates) will be "jerky" and maybe the picture will be too "muddy" for it to work real well. Not trying to sound negative, I think it is a great idea, but higher sppeds would probably be needed. You know just a few AZers logged in, will slow it down.

I would try and get a temporary "wireless" setup for the room. Many conventioneers use this service for their Mastercard/Visa machines, so it can communicate with the mainframes and get OKs for charges. This is very common service. Would be cheaper than, a 2 year wireless, equipment, setup, etc. Just some thoughts.

What would something like this cost & how would I go about getting it?? I'm completely clueless about this stuff. I just know how to work a computer if it's signed on and running right. All this stuff if greek to me! I'm definitely interested in learning more about this if you don't mind...

I personally would get them to"advertise" their service for FREE in your booth:D for the week

People are always looking to get in front of many customers, and with all the locals going through the DCC, this may be a good way to do it.

If they set up a wireless modem with you, just plug it in and start surfing.
I am sure a "techie" will be on hand for the company to make sure things work out alright. Use him/her to set your camera up.

Good idea I think but probably more work than you want to mess with. Put out an ad for "billiard geek" in a local paper to help you out!
