31 months ago or so, I ordered a cue from Paul with a simple challenge. Make a cue with 3 different woods, none of which can be ebony or holly.
This is the result.
A truly exceptional cue I think.
Unique "360" design with the main wood being a really rare piece of Katalox burl, and then highlighted with Mango burl and cocobolo (possibly burl also).
Killer abalone rings framed in silver and abalone and silver inlays in the middle.
The Katalox burl is so interesting. It has so many subtle colors and figures in a myriad of shades from blacks and greys to browns and even green.
Included are some matching JPs using a surprisingly exceptional piece of cocobolo. The JPs themselves are nicer than some cues and certainly probably almost as much work.
Paul used some truly exceptional shaft wood for the cue which was a super nice bonus. I am sure there is nicer somewhere but easily the best maple shaftwood I have ever had on a cue. They are 12.3 mm shafts but the wood is so dense that they are still 4.1 ounces each.
It is very light at 18.4 but has the Predator weight system so it could be adjusted. Also is fitted for Predator extension.
But even as pretty as it is, it hits even better. Because of the design the butt is essentially all wood with no coring or joints, rings or screws. It has a super solid hit that is very alive feeling and not overly stiff. Not sure what the ferrule material is but it feels and sounds like ivory. In fact, cue is one of the better sounding cues I have played with.
Workmanship is perfect. Pictures dont capture it because the Katalox burl is chatoyant and all the little abalone pieces sparkle in the light.
Truly a 1 of 1 cue and couldn't be happier. Thanks Paul F. Drexler
