We have been in Columbia the past couple of days. There is alot of good one pocket play. Parica beat Larry Nevell and John Schmidt beat Fabio Petroni fro Italy for the final two spots on the winners side. Joyner was playing Durbin for 5th-6th. The biggest surprise of the tournament was a local guy named Scott Rabon (supposedly taught by Grady). He handily beat all competetors till the final 8, where he drew Parica. He played an excellent match (up 2-1 at one point) but Parica prevailed 4-2. Rabon was playing Scott Frost for 5th-6th when we left at 1:45 am. We are headed back for the finals around lunch. I will try to keep you informed.
Grady is running an excellent event, but there is hardly any gambling (which I think is a little strange). It could be that the tournament is over really late each night.
One other shocking bit of news. Nick Varner was sailing through the winners bracket, but started having chest pains on Wednesday night. He withdrew from the tournament and checked himself into the hospital. Grady reported last night that they were keeping him over night for observation, but that everything seemed ok with him. I talked to him a few minutes on Tuesday night, and you cold tell he was not feeling up to par.
There is also one strange rule that I wanted to bring to your attention. If the last 5 or more balls are in the kitchen, or if the last 8 or more balls are above the side pocket, all balls are spotted. Grady says it's to prevent slow play. It has made for some controversy, with Joyner being down 7- 2 at a pivital point in a match agaianst a Baker gentleman from Clearwater (good player), and then banking one of the string and running out in about 45 seconds. I was curious as to your thoughts on this rule.

I have been aware for some time as to Grady's new rules concerning the spotting of balls and I like them. I'm not for using them in any gambling matches (and I don't think Grady is, either), but they're ideal for tournament play. At Planet 9-Ball in Tampa we've been playing that ANYTIME during a game that five balls are in the kitchen, they 'spot up' immediately. I watched in agony along with most others as Nick Varner sent all the balls uptable into a wedge by one corner pocket in almost all his matches in the now defunct Florida One Pocket Tour. His matches (races to 3) took four hours or more and sounded the death knell for that tour. Sure, he WON all four stops on the tour, but he made daily matches run into the wee hours of the morning. The room owners and paid spectators fell asleep. I watched him play two matches back to back, that took over 9 hours. Oy-Vey !
Many players simply stopped attending the events and Big Steve's attempt at a One Pocket 'Tour' came to a screeching halt. More's the pity... imo
Btw, if you use the 'five balls in the kitchen,spot up immediately" and play races to two the first two rounds and races to three for the final eight players (who are all in the money), you can have a 'one day' One-Pocket Tournament with the field limited to 32 players. I'm ALL for one day One Pocket Tournaments, for the average player that can't travel to multiple day events. In New Orleans (at Corner Pocket) they have a One Pocket "League" that everyone was very happy with.

In the loser's bracket: Scott Frost knocked out Fabio Petroni, 4 to 1, and Larry Nevell knocked out Cliff Joyner. Cliff had Larry 3-zip, and Larry came back from the dead to beat him, 4 to 3.
The player's meeting for the straight pool tournament is tonight at 8:00 p.m. Those confirmed (paid) for straight pool so far are:
Andrew Allman, Christopher Argenta, Eric Baker, Dan Barouty, John Cianslore, Danny Christian, Danny Deliberto, Danny Harriman, C.M. Lee, Grady Mathews, Ray Martin, Bob Opsahl, Fabio Petroni, John Schmidt, Dwight Thomas, and Roberto Valle.

Scott Frost knocked out Larry Nevel and will play Jose Parica at 7:00 PM tonight for the right to meet John Schmidt in the Finals. John beat Jose 4-2 in the winners side final. I am not sure of the score to the Frost\Nevel match. The final is at 9:30 PM...
