Growth Ring In Shaft Wood

I think that the number of growth rings is as important as the overall condition of the shaft wood. I just made a Q with a shaft that had 20 growth lines per inch. It had dark spots & grain that was not straight. I substatuted a shaft that had 11 grain lines per inch, but was clear in color & the grain was straight from joint to tip. To me I know the customer will be happier with this one than the other. I don't use any shaft, with less than 9 grain lines to the inch, but the STRAIGHTNESS of the grain is more important to me than the actual number of lines...JER

I tend to go with lots of growth rings, but what Jerry said about straightness of grain in his tight growth shaft holds true most of the time. When you open up the forest and the trees grow straight up real fast they produce loose grain and straighter grain but also produce more shoots off the side of the trunk producing the swirl here and there in the blank. The typical customer will pick a 7 or 8 growth ring shaft over a really tight one because he only sees one or two feathers where the shaft tapers from one grain line to another. Whereas on a 20 growth ring one he will see several feathers. If you want to use tight grain shafts that are not perfectly white you will have to educate the customer as to why you feel it is better.

I agree, shafts with more growth rings tend be to be darker... well that's what I have. It appears to be a series of layered butterfly points from the joint end goin to a few inches below the tip... the one that's from end to end is for my cue... :D

Here again you have to talk about apples & apples. If your shaft has a big ol' hunk of brass in the end, it will weigh about 1/3 of an oz. more than one without the bushing. I use a 3/8-10 screw directly into the wood. I just weighed a finished 20 growth ring shaft & it weighed 3.85 oz. As compared with one of my laminated shafts which are 20 layers of Maple, which weighed in at 4.2oz...JER
