jazznpool said:Growth rings are viewed from the joint end of the shaft. However, the hooping near the joint does suggest there are a good number of growth rings per inch. IMO, the straighter the grain and the less grain runout the better. I have a Southwest shaft that I am playing with now that has only about 5-6 grain lines. It is nice and clear maple. It plays beautifully and is as straight as can be.

matthew staton said:thank you jazznpool for the info. Do ya have any of those ned morris hustler cues left let me no.
Tifosi said:I don't mean to spoil the party but I have seen this pattern of growth rings on a shaft of my friend's cue. What happened was that the grains were so curved that they begin straight on the tip end but at more than 40 degrees at the joint end, thus the illusion of very dense growth.

I thought it deserved a prettier butt. Can anyone give input regarding thi situation? How can it be so straight and so stiff despite being less tight?

It's pretty much an 11 inch pro taper. But I want to turn it down to make it more comfortable. Yes its is darker than the normal maple I see. Grain is dark.
