Gunfight At High Noon

One of my favorite movies that I've watched a number of times is "The Quick And The Dead" http://www.thequickandthedead.net/ If you've never seen the movie, click onto the site which has a super cast, and reminds me of what modern day shootists are doing with their pool cues. In the movie, a competition was held everyday at high noon against two gunfighters in an elimination match until there was just one person standing alive at the end.
It was great!!

I think we have the potential for a good gunfight at high noon right here. Oldhasbeen and Willeebetmore. The way I see it stacking up is that OHB really is an OHB, that's living in his past and resting on his laurels wanting to relive his old glory days. Hell, he gave up the game for many years and just recently picked up a cue to start playing again and he's already woofing to play a match with Willee that, personally, I don't think he can win any more than Evander Holyfield could even beat a middleweight. He might still be a decent 9 ball player, but that's nothing but connect the dots and most of the time you start out after the break really only playing 7 ball. Who can't do that?

Willee on the other hand, didn't have the years of playing for cash like OHB did, but he's come on quite strong in his later years, especially in 14.1. It's kind of like another poster on here by the name of Wayne who only took up the game 8 or 9 years ago and already has won a Pechauer NW event. That to me is really impressive, and I think Willee, who hasn't abused himself in early years with drugs while playing and whiskey nerves could handle himself very well in a 14.1 match with OHB. Now, he did say that he'd match up after finding out his schedule but not until next winter. Hey...who's going to even remeber by then? I think this should come off within the next month or so. We'll let them negotiate the money. Neither one is poor by any means.

I think this is a match that everyone wants to see and is very doable because of the proximity to each other. Hell, they could at least split the distance difference and meet half way, unless that's just an excuse.
There's no reason why a decent match can't be determined like mature gentlemen. I do think that Willee's request for a game to 200 with a 120 spot is waaaay out of hand. I could almost see this match going off at even because I'm just not sure about OHB. Anybody notice that he didn't belly up for the Drivermaker challenge? What say ye AZer's? Yay....or... Nay. I don't think there should be any weasling out by either one since it is quite reasonable, especially with Willee getting lessons from Danny D. and OHB being an OHB.

I love that movie. Gene Hackman, Russel Crowe, and Keith David are amazing in it. The cinematography is great.

Oh yeah, a match between Willie and OHB would be great. but then again I would enjoy a match between anyone on here, it's pool any way you cut it.

Hey, didn't the young challenger (DiCaprio) get shot by the OldHasBeen (Hackman) in the movie???? I don't like this analogy one bit. How about "Last Man Standing" where the younger guy gets to plug the older guys?? Wait, he gets beat up quite a bit along the way, forget I said anything.

well yeah, but seriously, everyone watching that flick should have expected hackman to win that round. He's the villian, the antagonist. Also many could have considered Russell Crowe a younger man.

Oh yeah, not only did Smith (Willis) get beat up alot in Last Man Standing, he was also shot through the stomach.

Yes he did get shot (they were father and son), however, he not only outdrew Hackman but shot him in the neck first. Hackman's shot just happened to be on target. C'mon Willee...give an old guy his big break into fame again.

Look at all the hoopla that Mark threw out regarding himself and his past. He did his little thing on here and basked in the stories and glory and then faded off whenever somebody wanted a real question answered. They're just looking for another shot at the limelight and what once used to be. I don't think OHB would even care if he lost, he just wants some old fashioned action and fun.

You were ready to go to DCC to not only play and get into some action to test yourself against other good players. You even had a fair amount budgeted in case you lost. What do you think you were going to do, go there among all those guys and ask for the 5 and out? No...you were willing to take your lumps if need be. OHB isn't even going to the DCC because his game probably just isn't ready for it yet. Nobody can take a layoff for that long and just come back strong as ever. You have a much better chance against him than you do against the guys at the DCC. What did your coach tell you to do about testing yourself and your game?

Hey...it's just like the guys who aren't posting their scores for the DM Holiday Invitational. If they don't post, we can only think the worst about their play.
You're scores show you to be a damn sporty player. You've kicked my ass in that game. Don't be a pussy and not go for at least SOMETHING with OHB.
Then again you never know...he might not want to really belly up either. You guys live too close to each other not to give everybody some excitement on AZ, win...lose...or draw. And there's the magic word.....DRAW!!!! OHB may really NOT be willing or able to do anything. But if he is...c'mon go for it.
Whadayasay?

The way I see it... its a win/win situation. If OHB whips you tell Danny to take a hike and get OHB to teach you at 1/3 the price. If you beat OHB then sign him up for lessons with Danny and get a sign up bonus! :D p.s. my money goes on OHB since he is a local player in the area..we got to stick together.. no insult implied!

Cut Shot,
Are you sure he won't dump on you, and split with me???? Or am I sure that he won't offer to dump to me, but then actually beat me??? Or is he sure that I won't send a ringer in my place??? Or am I sure the ringer won't dump on me and split with OHB??? Ouch, my head is hurting; how am I going to know he isn't a ringer??? Wait, maybe he'll lose on purpose but then have his friends hit me on the head and steal my car??? Okay, my car is a piece of crap, but I've got to have something to drive. Anyway it would be worth the $300 just to keep D'maker from whining about the lack of excitement in his life (you know, like a good deed for the day).

P.S. - OHB at half speed still sounds like more than a match for me - I have the proper amount of respect for the road players; that's a tough line of work.

D'maker,
Let's calculate. If my chance against the real studs at DCC is 0%, and my chance against OHB is twice that; then 2 times 0 = 0%. Damn, I hate math.

Willee... Your gonna do better than that.. If its the same OHB I seen shooting one pocket at Cue & Cushion... Do Not play OHB One Pocket! I think at 14.1 you guys are 50/50 give or take ten. jmo

Cut Shot,
Do you mean 50/50 with the 120 ball spot?? You're not trying to "knock" his action are you? Or are you just trying to goad me into a game so you can make a killing betting on OHB? Man, my head is still hurting.

No Wille.. Just don't play one pocket with OHB! 14.1 is about 50/50 odds. I would come myself if Danny would play me! I would even come to spectate if I wasn't so darn busy with this job I have! Even if it never happens, I will not think less of you two.. believe me on this! I just thought if you two had the time it would be a fun challange. :) Just fun.. thats all! Now if Kieth McCready works up the nerve to meet me at Cue & Cushion for a shootout.. I will quit the dam job and be there with my DooM Cue! :D :D :D

We are midwesterners = Whats with this strightpool?

Willie - I don't think it would wise of me to play strightpool with anyone named WILLIE. I only played 2 or 3 games of strightpool in my life and that was when I was 18 or so. I know it is a wonderful game but it is only played on the east coast where the poolroom porters and rack boys can run 100 balls. They usually play for the time. If we can't play 9 ball or one pocket (the 2 most accepted games), how about 8 ball? As far as where to play, I will let you pick. The Break in Cahokia, IL is where I play and it is VERY safe. There has been many, many K games there and there has never been ANY trouble. A local cop is a player and there for big games. I have been there for most of the big games (never played) - but there is usually a lot bigger action going on than what we are talking about.
Some previous post have "Hit The Nail On The Head". I used to play pretty well but that was 25 years ago. I now just try to be competitive and struggle to play even with the kids. ego - "OldHasBeen"
What is the best place to play in Indy? The place with the best equip., etc. I can make it a business trip with just a few days notice. I will run an ad in the paper and interview sales reps.
For $500 sets, I really don't care that much about all the details - Lets just "Do It"! If you beat me, you won't be the first.

And you know I would be whining too. Attaboy Willee...I'm proud of you for taking the game. I guess the only thing that needs to be ironed out is the when, where, what game, and how much....minor details. ;)

The best thing about doing the gunfight at high noon is it's not spawned out of hatred and put-downs like the typical forum woofing matches get started.
Normally, someone wants to really hit the other guy over the head with a baseball bat, but under the guise of male bravado and put-downs with cues, a woofing match ensues which could NEVER take place mainly out of sheer distance between the two combatants. On top of that, why would two guys that hate each other in cyberspace want to even spend a few hours even being around one another in real life? It just ain't gonna happen.

This isn't like that. It really is a mature gentleman's agreement between two guys that live fairly close together. No, not exactly right around the corner from each other, but close enough. Whoever wins or loses won't be thought of any more or less by the forum, actually I think both of you will be held in a higher light for just getting it on.

I like both you and OHB and your posts are always interesting and entertaining. OHB and I are the same age and I'm sure at one time he could play damn good, but I'll put my money on the younger set of eyes right now, no offense OHB, but I gotta go with my gut. (I could hedge this bet at any time)

Now OHB, you and I came up with a similar background in matching up, I think in all fairness you shouldn't be asking for weight just to get a lock on this match. I know if it was me, I'd be asking for the moon and we'd be negotiating for a month before anything happened, if at all, but I think you ought not do that with Willee. (And likewise Willee with OHB)

Dang... you guys are making me want to buy tickets to see this! Reminds me of High Noon with the combatants faceing each other.. waiting for the other guy to make a move! If this match takes place I hope everyone involved just has a good time. Life is just too short to have little things like a pool match upset you. I am sure both OHB & Willee will have a great time. :)

I would like to see Willie snap this off from the stand point that what I gather he has been a recreational/casual player for many years until the bug really bit him in his 40s to elevate his game and unless he's a Pulitzer prize winning BS artist he has really invested time and effort to that end. That makes him the sentimental favorite in my book. On the other hand you gotta love the old war horse OHB for chiming in and asking “Wanna play some ??? “

I’ll contribute a T-shirt from the Anchorage Billiard Palace to the winner. Anyone else want to pony up with a T-shirt from their local pool hall? Might be cool for the winner to get t-shirts from the 4 corners of AZ land.

Mine would have to be a 5X
