gunslingers of the old west

So many times have I heard of pool players likened to the gunslingers of the old west......It seems somewhat appropriate to me, since when 2 top players meet up, they want to see who can "outshoot" each other.....and with some of the famous names in pool, how can you not draw a comparison to some of those old gunslingers?

Cole Dixon
Shannon Daulton
Cory Deuel
Johnny Archer
Earl Strickland
Buddy Hall (the Rifleman)
Billy (the Kid) Aguerro
Gabe Owen
Keith McCready
Luther Lassiter
Irving Crane
U.J. Puckett

Some fine names for a western shoot-em up movie, if you ask me.....anybody think of any others?

Whatever happened to Billy Aguerro? I remember he was top gun in the Bay Area, joined the PBT, and got in the top 20 pretty quickly. Then it almost seemed like he disappeared. He and Billy Palmer were my favorites from Nor Cal. Where is he now? And does he still play?

Smokey

I saw Smokey in action at Steepleton's in Lexington in the mid 90s or so. He was in action with a shortstop giving up the 6 and out running the nuts. At one point they got into an argument and Smokey took his shirt off (wow, he did have alot of scars) and challenged the guy to take it out to the parking lot, but the other guy declined. He did jump those balls well. He was taking it off (drinking two beers at a time) until they quit serving beer and lost it back.

Some of the best in the West (and East and Dixie and Yankee Country) are relatively unknown to many, sometimes by their own design. ;)

There is a good lot "by their own design". Some are real smooth. One who is still out there hustlin is in his 70's or so - criss crossing the country. Every once in awhile I have heard his name mentioned - he was very successful financially - raised 4 or 5 kids. I don't think he needs to hustle anymore - just loves the hunt.

Add Danny (Toby) Sweet to that list. He doesn't play anymore and is now and artist and prefers to spend his days painting, but he was one of the best. You may by the way want to buy some of his art it may be worth something someday.

I asked about him the other day at the Hard Times one pocket tournament in Sacramento. He is raising a family & working in the North Bay & not playing. He used to play for the Moose Lodge, maybe some one out there knows more about it than me. I used to like to play him and tried a few times but never liked the results. John Henderson
