I have started keeping my eye out to get a more precision lathe. Looking on craigslist I have found some close but one of the better ones says it is a gunsmiths lathe. Is there a difference or any kind of benefit to this type of lathe over a standard metal lathe?

Not a lot different. You will still have to ask the same basic questions if you want the lathe to be used full duty for cuework. Distance between centers, distance of actual travel, spindle bore diameter, speeds and threading cutting capability...

Gunsmith lathes usually have a better mechanism for getting the tailstock very tight for the rigors of drilling. There is usually some sort of spider/adapter for the rear of the spindle to clamp/support the barrel. It often amounts to only some screws threaded through the end of the spindle that is sticking out the back of the lathe. The screws would be tightened down so the barrel runs true but held securely. You would probably replace this with a better rear adapter or rear chuck for cue work.

Here is a grizzly gunsmith lathe.

Besides what are mentioned by MVP already, gunsmiths prefer a narrower head stock.
