I've posted this years ago, but now with all the TV and tour talk I wanted to revisit it.
We all know One Pocket is way too slow for TV, and 9 + 10 ball just don't seem to hold audiences.

What about getting the fast and fun to watch "stroke" players, NOT trick shot players unless they wanted to enter, to play a game of HORSE where the rules were limited to legal shots/stroke shots.

It would be fast paced, players like Earl, Corey, Fedor (with his jump stick) etc. could let their strokes out and the fans I believe would love it.

I like the idea.

A trick shot contest using a format like the basketball game horse would be neat too.

No duplicate shots, nothing added to the table like bottles or paper bags, etc. Maybe a 25 second shot clock.
I could see something like they did with speed pool.

There are so many different things you could do with this.

Didn't Earl propose something like this he called placement pool? I can see this being interesting to watch. HORSE would be good, as would allowing banter between the players and let them get real competitive with shots they specialize in, with hopes their opponent couldn't hang.
 
There's actually some strategy to that game. For example, if everyone makes your shot, you get the letter. You want to be choosing your shot instead of shooting someone else's, but you need to choose a balance between being able to make your shot and making it too easy for the players following you.

On the subject, I've watched Earl warm up one time and then he started showing off...he put the cue ball deep in the jaws of the corner pocket and the object ball in the middle of the table pointed straight in the opposite corner. He jacked so he could stop it and hit the shot way harder then he needed to for some reason. He fired at those for about a half hour and probably made 85-90%. Quite the display. Fun to watch.

The Horse format is what our playoffs are in artistic pool. ESPN Trickshot magic had better ratings than any pool match so its proven this format would work.
 
I would get bored with HORSE pretty quickly. I always thought that a high stakes ring game format with the players mic'd up and a ready finger on the BEEP button would be a fun watch.
