Half Court Pool

I have a 5x10 snooker table, which I enjoy very much. I like for the most part big table games, but have played league 8 ball on bar boxes for years. In the past I had a bar box that my wife once discovered had replaced the dining room table without her knowledge or buy in. Bad idea. The best of both worlds I thought. It sadly had a short stay in the house. I have often dreamed about that second table to work on high traffic game dynamics. To that end I will be joining a straight pool league this fall which also seems to get that cluster type feel.

But I was just thinking today about playing a game on half the table? Think 8ball (or lineup straight pool) but only using the front 4 pockets? I did a search of the forums and did not see anything like this, but that could be simply not using the right key word. Or maybe the idea is too stupid to contemplate.

I was thinking about a soft break and no foul for not executing a legal normal break. Any balls on the break going past the side pockets get spotted on the head string and play commences. After that any balls other than the cue ball that pass the side pockets will be spotted and a BIH foul is charged. My rules would allow only the cue ball to escape with no foul and shots could be made by the cue ball from that position out of bounds.

A game like this obviously places a premium on soft shots, cluster management and defense. Does such a game exist? Any comments, positive and negative, are welcome. I think it can be fun and instructive. I have considered mini tables like the Olhausen Bantam and this seems similar. Would it be too easy or too boring? Again, let it rip.
